The Laboratory for Extreme Mechanics & Additive Manufacturing, led by Professor Yu Zou, uses novel experimental, analytical, and computational tools to explore materials with extreme properties or under extreme conditions, particularly for metallic materials. The research themes include metals, mechanics, manufacturing, and machine learning, covering many length and time scales. Of particular interest is to advance the fields of vital importance to the society, including aerospace, biomedical, electronic, environment, and energy sectors.

The successful candidate will join Professor Yu Zou’s group and will be responsible for development of the experimental work, execution of the experiments, evaluation of the results, support undergraduate / graduate students and publish academic papers. This position will report to Professor Yu Zou.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, applied physics and other related science or engineering disciplines
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in physical metallurgy, such as microstructure characterization and mechanical testing, is preferred
  • Plan, design, and execute experiments related to high and low-temperature mechanical testing
  • Conduct critical analysis of recorded data followed by the optimization, reformulation, or re-design of the experiments as required
  • Prepare research reports and figures for publications / presentations both at conferences and in journals
  • Direct projects, guide/supervise junior team members
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership/organization as a team leader in Research and Development projects
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and work environment
  • Engage in complementary collaborations within or external to the research group
  • Contribute to writing grant applications. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab
  • The candidate is expected to support the overall research missions of the lab, and execute the research vision with PI to achieve research goals
