Research Associate - Indigenous Health

The Research Associate will be an integral position to move forward aspects of a research program focused on forging innovative models for collaborating directly with Indigenous communities to improve maternal-child-family health outcomes and non-communicable disease-related health. The Research Associate will be a part of a team applying Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, strengths-based, and community-based participatory research reconciliation approaches to research in partnership with Indigenous communities and partners. Under the direction of and in consultation with the PI (Dr. Richard Oster), the Research Associate will:

  • Plan research activities and provide research design for a project and/or program;
  • Oversee, plan and assist with the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Oversee, plan and assist with writing of research papers, preparation of presentations and publications;
  • Read and be up-to-date on current related literature;
  • Determine the most appropriate methodology in carrying out identified research goals;
  • Prepare proposals for new research activities, including assisting in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals;
  • Present research results in seminars scientific conferences, community settings, and or related settings;
  • Foster communication with off campus partners, and carry out extensive engagement, relationship building, and consultation activities with Indigenous communities;
  • Conduct some administrative duties at a managerial level (may include some human resource, budgetary and/or equipment management);
  • Guide and coach students and research assistants.

The candidate must have:

  • A graduate degree (PhD preferred) in a health-related field;
  • A minimum of 3 years research experience (post-doctoral research experience preferred);
  • Experience in Indigenous health research and community-based research;
  • Experience in community engagement, building relationships and trust, and working directly with Indigenous communities and/or partners;
  • Understanding of strengths-based, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial approaches to collaborative research;
  • Experience in leading and conducting mixed methods research approaches;
  • Experience in planning qualitative and quantitative studies, and collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Knowledge demonstrated through research collaboration and scientific publications;
  • Outstanding communications skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement , this full time (FTE 1.0) position has a term length of three years, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits  and an annual salary range of $74,084 - $92,620. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

COVID-19 Vaccination: Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 in compliance with the University’s COVID-19 Vaccination Directive. Fully Vaccinated means a status an individual achieves 14 days after having received the recommended number of doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada or the World Health Organization, and requires the individual to maintain the recommended number and type of vaccine doses as updated and required by Health Canada thereafter.
