The McGill University and Genome Centre is a world-class research facility for genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. More than a hundred researchers, technicians and bioinformaticians work at the Center, which is located on McGill University’s main campus. The facility holds a number of high-throughput technology platforms that generate TBs of data/week and state of the art computing resources to support the various research activities.

This is to Assist the Head of Genome Sciences long read and single cell genomic technology development projects funded by Genome Canada.

JOB SUMMARY

An exciting opportunity to work on multidisciplinary research projects in Cancer Genomics and to participate in the development and application of state-of-the art technologies in cancer research. The work includes the study of cancer genomes and transcriptomes, with a focus on childhood brain cancers using cutting edge genomic technologies, including third generation sequencing technologies.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and apply new technologies in enomics, such as single embryo RNA-seq and DNA-seq.

  • Generate data using third generation NGS platforms (PacBio, Nanopore) and perform multi-platform integrated analysis.

  • Perform transcriptome and genome assemblies,  and large-scale variation discovery.

  • Apply and/or develop visualization and pathway annotation tools in order to aid the biological interpretation of outputs.

  • Be able to work in a self-sufficient manner and formulate ideas for further developments to be discussed with the main PI.

  • Troubleshoot analysis pipeline problems as necessary to ensure operational integrity.

  • Develop training materials for the analytical pipelines suitable for more junior staff and students.

  • Co-supervise doctoral students, research assistants and lab technicians.

  • Keep abreast of any new developments in the field and new software packages.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • PhD in Life Sciences and minimum 5 years of research experience including experience in Computational Biology and Molecular Biology

OTHER QUALIFYING SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated Molecular Biology skills

  • Tissue Culture Experience desirable

  • Previous experience in generating and analyzing  NGS data, genome annotation or in developing sequence analysis pipelines

  • Computer skills (e.g. programming in Perl, Python, C++, Java, mySQL) are required

  • Familiarity with statistical computing programs, R and Matlab, would be useful

  • Ability to work independently, yet be a team player, in a multi-disciplinary environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
