Research Associate Biomaterials, Department of Materials Engineering

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks a promising individual for a part time 40% FTE, term Research Associate position. There may be a possibility of extension subject to work performance and funding availability. The anticipated start date of the position is January 1, 2023.

The successful candidate will lead in various biomaterials research projects, provide research support to graduate students on those projects, and conduct regular lab safety inspections. One research project is design, process, and test ceramic coatings on stainless steels for improved antimicrobial and wear resisting properties. The second project is to characterize the ultrastructure, degree of mineralization, and mechanical properties of bone tissues using various microscopy techniques including electron microscopes. Successful candidate should have had research experience in carrying out research on orthopaedic implants and bone tissues.

A PhD degree in materials or biomedical engineering and hands-on skills in using electron microscopes and various mechanical testing facilities are required. Experience as a Post-Doctoral Fellow beneficial. The position is expected to report to faculty supervisor, Dr. Rizhi Wang, biweekly.
