Job Summary

To provide technical support in the Tocheva lab by assisting Graduate students and Postdoctoral researchers with their experimental work. The lab assistant will be working independently to design and execute a CRISPR/Cas9 system to manipulate A. longum , an anaerobic sporulating bacterium. This project requires learning about the system, designing constructs, testing them in

E. coli  and A. longum  and performing fluorescent light microcopy and electron microscopy analyses.

Organizational Status
Works independently under guidance from the Principal Investigator.
Work Performed

  • Make complex media for the growth of anaerobic bacteria
  • Design and execute experiments using molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology approaches
  • Essential skills: PCR, Western blot, anaerobic growth conditions, CRISPR/Cas9
  • Write detailed protocols 
  • Performs basic literature research, such as, searching for articles on-line or the library. Assists with monitoring and care of animals with appropriate training provided.
  • Cleans and performs basic maintenance of tools, equipment and apparatus. 
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The work involves critical thinking and problem solving. All problems to be referred to supervisor.  


Supervision Received
Works independently under guidance from the Principal Investigator.
Supervision Given
None but may explain work sequencers to others.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
