Research Assistant on Trans Rights

We are looking for a knowledgeable, self-directed student to serve as a research assistant for the Social Innovation Lab from May 2024 to April 2025 (subject to renewal). This position will support the project titled: “Trans Rights are Human Rights: From Research to Justice” which is supported by the Saskatchewan Law Foundation. The Social Innovation Lab is focused on reorienting the community-university research relationship via community-directed projects and this particular project will work with community partners including CLASSIC and the Elizabeth Fry Society on a project related to trans legal rights and increasing awareness of the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ people who have been incarcerated in the past.


This position will work alongside a research team that includes Dr. Rachel Loewen Walker (WGST and Political Studies, USask) and Dr. Bryce Stoliker (Research Officer at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Justice Studies, USask). Note that the research team is keen on hiring a student who would like to conduct this research as part of their honour or graduate research. We are open to discussing this further.

In the appointment of Research Assistant, your general duties and responsibilities will be:
• Engage with community partners in relation to community research projects

  • Perform research-related activities such as literature searches and reviews, data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Prepare ethics proposals and amendments
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups, transcribing and analyzing qualitative data
  • Participate in dissemination activities (workshops, presentations, etc.)
  • Knowledge mobilization through the preparation of reports, summaries, analyses, and infographics, as needed
  • Create reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Logistical support for project and partners

Your general location of work will be remote, and in-person and you will report to Dr. Rachel Loewen Walker (WGST and Political Studies, USask) and Dr. Bryce Stoliker (Research Officer at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Justice Studies, USask)

Required Number of Hours: 15-25 hours per week for May to August; 5-10 hours per week for September to April
Duration of Employment: May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025

Qualifications (Skills and Abilities)
Research Experience: We are looking for someone with pre-existing experience in preparing ethics 
applications, conducting interviews, transcribing and analyzing qualitative data, and preparing literature reviews and other research outputs.

  •  Collaboration: Able to work with multiple community organizations and collaborators (student and faculty) from various areas and disciplines. 
  •  Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, ability to navigate academic and community environments with ease.
  • Independence and Dependability: Able to work independently, follow timelines and meet project expectations and deadlines.

Eligibility

  • Graduate student in Arts and Science, Law, Edwards School of Business, the School of Public Health, or Johnson Shoyama Graduate School. Upper year undergraduate students will be considered as well.
  • Resident of Saskatoon. Some work will be remote, and some will be in-person.
  • Special consideration will be given to students with lived experience of 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, and other racialized communities.
