Job Summary

The research team of Dr. Jessica Liauw at the UBC Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) Department is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Research Assistant to join our team.

The Research Assistant will be involved in participant recruitment, explaining study procedures, obtaining informed consent, maintaining REDCap databases, assisting with ethics amendments and acquisition of data from research sites. Exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative are required.

The research assistant will mostly assist with the project “Placental Growth Factor to Reduce Neonatal Transport and Unnecessary Maternal Relocation in BC: A Pilot Study” and other maternal fetal medicine projects as needed.

WORK LOCATION: This job requires in-person work mostly from BC Women's Hospital. Occasional travel to our Surrey site (Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre in Surrey) may be required.


Organizational Status

The Research Assistant is supervised by and reports to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Jessica Liauw), and Research Manager.
Work Performed

  • Conduct study recruitment (identifying subjects; explaining study procedure; obtaining informed consent; phone and e-mail follow-up with potential participants; posting flyers)

  • Enter participant data in the electronic data entry system (REDCap) according to study protocol and address data queries in a timely manner

  • Assist in the acquisition of data from different research sites and individuals

  • Develop rapport with clinical and laboratory staff and follow up as needed to ensure timely recruitment of participants and processing of samples

  • Prepare infographics using Canva and/or PowerPoint to assist with the recruitment of patient partners and research participants

  • Prepare documents and online forms for ethics and operational applications

  • Attend meetings to help define strategy, goals, and logistics of research projects

  • Communicates with, and regularly reports to, the Research Manager and Investigators about the status of research projects

  • Conduct database checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of participant data

  • Generate simple reports summarizing key findings or outcomes of the study

  • Assist in the preparation of study closure documents and reports

  • Assist in the dissemination of study results through presentations or publications

  • Performs other study-related duties as required


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner and with adherence to the Tri-Council Policy Statement concerning Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. Any procedures or data recorded as part of this study must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head, and the Research Assistant’s governing professional organization (if applicable).

Errors made could influence the ability of researchers and research staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the investigators, the research results, and the quality of the research program.


Supervision Received

Aspects of the work will be done independently or under supervision of the Research Manager; however the Principle Investigator supervises the project.
Supervision Given
Student trainees may shadow the Research Assistant, but the Research Assistant will not be their direct supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A great fit for this position would include:

  • Experience supporting applied health research in an academic and/or clinical environment

  • Previous experience in clinical research and participant recruitment

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve

  • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner

  • Ability to communicate with diplomacy, tact, and positive regard both verbally and in writing

  • Attention to detail, motivated to take initiative within projects, and ability to learn from mistakes

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect PHSA and UBC privacy policies at all times

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities

  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft applications at an intermediate level (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel)

  • Previous experience in performing study closure, database management, and simple data analysis would be considered an asset for this role
