Position Summary:
With a strong focus on interdisciplinary work, the position will involve supporting the Advanced BioImaging Facility (ABIF) imaging scientists in general facility operations, microscope maintenance, one-on-one training of facility users and support for logistics and teaching microscopy courses and workshops. The primary duties will include:
Consultation: Sit in on ABIF user consultation meetings.
Training: Perform one-on-one training of users on widefield and confocal laser scanning microscopy.
Facility Operations: Assist with regular facility operations such as room cleaning, objective lens cleaning, hazardous waste remove, restocking of supplies, changing of gas cylinders.
Maintenance: Execute regular maintenance on facility equipment. Document all equipment service.
Education: Keep up on the literature relevant for user projects, attend seminars and training events as appropriate, attend ABIF courses and support course logistics.
Qualifications:
MSc degree in preferred areas including Biophysics, Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience.
Hands-on and theory experience with light microscopy.
Familiarity with imaging and image analysis software: ImageJ, Imaris, LASAF, ZEN, MetaMorph.
Experience working in a dynamic environment. Must be able to manage a diverse set of obligations on a daily basis with rapidly changing demands and priorities.
Strong interpersonal skills for working with facility users, principal investigators and potential new clients within the research community.
Ability to communicate complex ideas to people new to the field.
Ability to work independently and efficiently but also work well as a part of a team.
Strong verbal and written communication in English.
Strong verbal and written communication in French would be an asset.
Additional Information:
Planned Start Date & End Date of appointment: May 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 (14 months).
Work Location: Bellini Building Rm136, 3655 Prom. Sir William Osler, Montreal, QC H3G 1Y6. Canada.
Work schedule: Monday to Friday – Onsight.
Hourly Wage: Minimum: $30/hour. Hourly rate to be commensurate with education & work experience.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.
