The Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology (REES), a tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The appointment as Chair is an administrative appointment for an initial 5-year term, commencing July 1, 2024. The appointment will be at the successful candidate’s existing faculty rank, and a Chairs’ stipend will be provided.

The Department of REES plays a role in delivery of all of the faculty’s undergraduate programs with enrolment of over 1700 students. The department holds both MSc, and PhD programs, along with a master of agriculture and a joint MBA/MAg to over 70 graduate students. Principal areas of research activity are in environmental and resource economics and sociology; the economics of Agriculture, Food, & Agribusiness; and international development.

Eligible applicants are full-time faculty members who hold a tenured appointment in the Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will be a respected authority in an area related to the Department’s principal areas of responsibility and will bring vision, leadership ability, and strong communication and management skills to the position. Administrative and supervisory experience is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be a team builder and is expected to be a strong advocate for both the Department and the Faculty, including playing a leadership role in acquiring external resources through the identification, development and pursuit of new funding opportunities. Additionally, the Chair will work to cross boundaries and strengthen collaborative relationships with a broad range of organizations and associations, both on and off campus, including provincial and federal governments; key industry partners in economics, energy agriculture and environmental services sectors; NGO’s; First Nations and community stakeholders. The Chair will promote excellence across the Department’s primary mandates of teaching, research and community service.

The Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology has 15 faculty and administers an annual operating budget as well as grants and trust funds, and approximately $3M in total endowments.
