Position Summary:

Reporting to the Head Coach Redbird Basketball, the assistant coach will assist with the coaching and administrative duties for the Men’s Basketball team, operating under U Sports operating bylaws, university policies and the philosophy and objectives of the varsity program and athletic unit. Objectives are to create an environment which fully develops the potential of all varsity student- athletes involved with the Redbird basketball program. The assistant coach will also be responsible for certain administrative tasks, coordinate campus visits for potential Redbird Basketball recruits, as well as individual skill development. The assistant coach will provide the integration of McGill's values, standards, and goals with respect to student life and learning in conjunction with the values, standards, and goals of the Redbird Basketball team.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the Redbird Basketball program.
  • Work with Head Coach and varsity student-athletes on Redbird Basketball team. Liaise with sports leagues and associations, Quebec CEGEPs and with high schools, provincially, nationally, and internationally.
  • Organize the structure of training camps, clinics and create team building activities for the Redbird Basketball program. Implement practice plans. Review and monitor Redbird Basketball team and individual varsity student- athlete technical and strategic development.
  • Monitor Redbird Basketball seasonal plans, including technical, tactical and the strategic components for the Redbird Basketball program.
  • Supervise Redbird Basketball support staff and oversee the work of employees, including casuals. Assist employees in their training. 
  • In collaboration with other professionals, assist in the development and implementation of fitness programs for basketball varsity student-athletes that include aerobic, anaerobic, speed, power, and agility training.
  • Assist in the administering fitness and skills tests on an individual and group basis.
  • Work with the Redbird Basketball varsity student-athletes on mental preparation, including stress management, mental rehearsal, and visualization techniques.
  • Monitor and support the cognitive and emotional development and recovery/regeneration of Redbird Basketball varsity student-athletes.
  • Monitor the academic progress of the Redbird Basketball varsity student-athletes.
  • Implement administrative procedures and processes in support of the Redbird Basketball team goals and objectives. Compile statistics and produce reports for inclusion in university and external reports.
  • Collaborate with the Redbird Basketball coaching team on the creation of non-conference and practice schedules, budget, and team travel schedule.
  • Participate in the organization of activities and events including Redbird Basketball coaching clinics/camps, practices, banquets, and award ceremonies.
  • Work with University Advancement on implementing fundraising activities, community outreach and sponsorship programs.
  • Attend meetings.
     

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Undergraduate degree 
  • Three (3) years’ related experience
  • NCCP Basketball Train-to-Train certified
  • Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
