Campus & Community Recreation is the host of multiple wellness activities and events that run throughout the University of Alberta campus. This includes recreational events and programs that are available at South Campus as well as North Campus.

Campus & Community Recreation has two facilities on the University of Alberta South Campus – Foote Field and the Saville Community Sports Centre (East and West). Foote Field features competition level artificial turf, track, and grass field, as well as a multi-use plaza, conference room, and lounge space. East facilities feature a curling rink (10 sheets) , tennis courts (8 courts), fitness centre, bar and lounge,sport performance centre, and various multi-purpose spaces. West facilities feature nine gymnasiums, a competition gym, gymnastics centre, fitness studio, classrooms and food, and beverage services. The sport and recreation faculties on the south campus experience over 3.4 million visits per year.

Position

The Recreation Facility Operator (RFO) is integral to the overall functioning of the Saville Community Sports Centre and Foote Field operations on south campus.

The Recreation Facility Operator reports directly to the Operations Supervisor, South Campus Facilities. The Recreation Facility Operator contributes to the safe and efficient operation of the sport and recreation facilities located on south campus. The role of the RFO is to support the day-to-day facility operations of Saville Community Sports Centre (East) (primary emphasis on the tennis/curling operation), Foote Field and the Outdoor Tennis Centre. Key job functions include ice preparation and maintenance, tennis court maintenance, general facility monitoring and maintenance, and event set-up and take-down. The RFO is responsible for performing daily maintenance procedures including opening and closing (securing) of facilities, in accordance with the facility policies and procedures. The fulfillment of these tasks is critical to the seamless operation of the building for safe, effective service to facility users. Due to the seasonal nature of the sport areas, the Operations Supervisor, South Campus Facilities may assign a greater percentage of duties in any area based on operational need.

The position requires a commitment to excellent public relations, the ability to manage time, oversee casual staff team members, make decisions as required and balance multiple demands. The position also requires the ability to perform manual work (set-up, take-down, ice maintenance and use of equipment) and mechanical aptitude.

This position operates as a rotating position and requires shift work and work on the weekends.

Duties

  • Provides support for the day to day operation of the Saville Community Sports Centre and Foote Field
  • Installs and maintains curling ice
  • Sets-up and takes-down field and gymnasium equipment
  • Completes artificial and natural turf maintenance
  • Maintains and repairs all equipment used for facility programs, ie. Curling rocks, tennis nets, facility netting
  • Operates and inspects the irrigation system for both artificial and natural grass turfs
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools; safely operates facility forklift and other equipment as needed
  • Snow removal from around the Foote Field air-supported structure
  • Foote Field Dome installation requiring work to be completed at heights on a lift
  • Responsible for opening and closing of the facility
  • Provides First Aid response when necessary
  • Completes accident report forms and WCB forms
  • Responds to complaints, questions and requests from users; receives suggestions with open mind ensuring all situations are handled in a positive and fair manner
  • Provides technical support to the Golden Bears and Pandas varsity teams
  • Responsible for preparation and service for special set-ups, major events, special rentals, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Current Standard First Aid (within 3 years) and Level C CPR (within 1 year) required
  • Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract is required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to perform physical tasks and operate a variety of equipment
  • EHS Supervisory Development Program will be required upon employment
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a multi-purpose recreational facility with specific emphasis on ice maintenance
  • Able to work a variable work schedule spanning 5:30am – 12:00am 7 days/week

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level 1 Turf Maintenance certificate is an asset.
  • Level 1 Canadian Curling Association Ice Technicians Certificate is an asset.
  • Experience in an ice technician’s role is an asset.
  • Experience with Recreation Management Software (Intelligenz) is an asset.
