Position Overview

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Real World Evidence Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reports to the Manager of Operations.

The Real World Evidence (RWE) Analyst will analyze big administrative and clinical data which involves highly technical skills and producing reports and detailed documentation of analytical processes.

The RWE Analyst works closely with the Real World Evidence Unit at the University of Alberta. 

The RWE Unit is part of a provincial Consortium, with members at both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. 

As part of this Consortium the RWE Analyst conducts high quality, decision grade, real world evidence research studies that address health focused questions relevant to providers, decision makers, clinicians, patients, and industry funders in a responsive and timely manner.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform high-level mathematical research and analysis, of considerable complexity, related to many aspects within the department, institute and with several research groups

  • Develop innovative mathematical methods

  • Set direction & supervise any number of unit members and students

  • Be responsible for project timelines, organizing resources for projects and defining project deliverables

  • To deal effectively with complex issues using judgment and initiating resolutions

  • Able to prioritize and determine importance from a large volume of work on a constant basis is essential

  • Manage and provide expertise for modeling of large clinical and administrative datasets and acts as a leader planning and providing services to support the teaching and research needs of the research team

  • Develop innovative and creative approaches to mathematical modeling and analyses

  • Contributes to and enhances learning environment of the research team

  • Able to work under high stress conditions and expect a high impact of error and uphold the credibility of the University

  • Plans and undertakes sophisticated data analyses for multiple research topics, which includes:

    • researching optimal mathematical analyses given the specifics and limitations of the data

    • learning the techniques to undertake the analyses

    • undertaking the analyses (including data cleaning and manipulation)

    • interpreting the results; preparing a summary of the results

    • requires considerable skills in programming (given the complexity of the analysis), analytical skills and writing/preparing publishable manuscripts

  • Contributes to writing proposals, ethics applications and the writing of reports and manuscripts for publication, including mathematical analysis and results sections

  • Provides mathematical and research project guidance to graduate students including Masters, PhD, Post-Doctoral students

  • Supervises co-workers within the research team regarding data management, data analysis, and programming issues

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc in Mathematics, Biostatistics or a related field required

  • PhD in Mathematics, Biostatistics or a related field preferred

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience and responsibility in the linking, management, and analysis of large population-level health data assets for research projects

  • A deep understanding of statistical concepts and ability to develop and appropriately apply advanced methods that innovate health data science

  • Demonstrated communication, presentation, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with presenting software topics (training, conference talks, etc.)

  • Publication record in peer-reviewed publications and/or contributions to open-source projects available on GitHub is an asset

  • Proficiency in Python and/or R is an asset

  • Experience with mathematical methods such as generalized linear models (e.g., Poison regression and Logistic regression models) and survival models (e.g., the Cox model and frailty models), computing methods, such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, EM algorithm is an asset

  • Must be able to protect sensitive health care and research data & understand regulations and policy from both the Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (FOIP & HIA) and the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB)

  • Proven ability to develop innovative and creative approaches to data analysis and problem solving using a high degree of judgment and skill

  • Must demonstrate strong communication, facilitation, negotiation and leadership skills

  • High degree of judgement, creativity, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Superlative knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques

  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
