ReCONstruct is a five-year, $6M applied research project to develop a scalable, turn-key mass building climate retrofit program within Quebec in response to the climate emergency. Deep building climate retrofits can help to reduce the impact of climate change on existing buildings and improve resiliency during extreme weather events, as well as contributing to power grid stability through reduced mean and peak loads. The project is funded through an NSERC Alliance grant with Hydro-Québec and the Ministère des Ressources Naturelles du Québec.
ReCOnstruct is led by Prof. Michael Jemtrud, the Chair in Architecture, Energy, and Environment at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture at McGill. The multi-disciplinary team includes researchers at Carleton University’s Center for Advanced Building Envelope Research (CABER) and the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) , the University of Toronto’s Daniels School of Architecture, and Hydro-Quebec's Energy Technology Laboratory (LTE) . They have backgrounds in architecture, engineering, building science, data and computer science, urban planning, and the social sciences. The project will address the obstacles to mass deep climate retrofit deployment by engaging with stakeholders from a range of sectors including construction, manufacturing, building maintenance, ownership and management, finance, and policy.
The research will be driven and informed by a series of pilot project retrofits through which exemplar retrofit proposals will be developed and tested. The realization of these projects will demonstrate the feasibility of deep climate retrofits and serve as a catalyst to build the capacity needed in the regional professional and industrial sectors to deploy them at a massive scale. ReCONstruct currently intends to focus on specific building types with a high potential for impact, including schools, community centres and public multi-unit residential buildings.
ReCONstruct is looking for a talented and motivated design thinker to join the interdisciplinary research project’s leadership team. The successful applicant must able to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously, make thorough evaluations and decisive decisions, develop long term strategic plans, define short and medium term deliverables, and ensure effective communication and collaboration across the team. They must have strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills and be confident synthesizing information from multiple disciplines.
Responsibilities will include:
Take a leadership role within the project’s steering committee; Coordinate with objectives, timelines, and deliverables amongst project leadership and team members; Outline the scope and timeline of tasks, task dependencies, sequencing, and priorities. Delegating tasks as appropriate; Prepare project timelines, roadmaps, and GANTT charts; Coordinate between different research partners and organizations; Prepare and consolidate presentation components from across team; Prepare budget projections, manage project finance, and address procurement; Identify and manage the support resources needed for different sub-groups; Prepare monthly and annual reports to project and funding partners; Manage internal communications with team; Write job descriptions, identifying scope of work and qualifications necessary for role.
Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or construction management, with a background in sustainable design. Minimum three years of professional work experience, with management and leadership experience, and minimum of one year experience within research organizations.
