Working for Moving Transport Forward in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences 

Our research group, Moving Transport Forward , led by Dr. Emily Grise, is located in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, which is in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers interdisciplinary approaches to diverse teaching and research themes. One of the largest and best supported departments in Canada, it has an international reputation for leading-edge research. The EAS department was established in 1995 when the former departments of Geology (1912) and Geography (1957) were merged. EAS has grown to more than 50 faculty members, and over 120 graduate students, and is recognized for its scholarly achievement, excellence in teaching and research, and service to the community.

Position 

To counter the pollution of fossil fuel powered vehicles in the public transit sector, agencies across the globe have ramped up the purchase of net-zero emission buses, with battery electric buses (BEBs) leading alternatives such as hydrogen fuel-cell buses. This study will comprehensively assess empirical data on the operational performance of BEB fleets in select winter cities.  In this work, the researcher will work with the Principle Investigator to identify challenges, opportunities, and strategies for transit agencies in winter cities to decarbonize their bus fleets.

Duties 

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Conducting a critical systematic literature review to synthesize the current state of knowledge on the operational and financial performance of battery electric buses.
  • Analyzing transit operations data with partner agencies to develop key performance indicators.  
  • Writing academic papers and research briefs to disseminate the research findings.   
  • Minimum Qualifications

    • A PhD degree awarded within the past 5 years in a discipline relevant to the project (such as Urban Planning, geography, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental sciences).  

    Preferred Qualifications

    The following qualifications are considered an asset for this role:

    • Demonstrated strength in conducting scoping/systematic literature reviews (i.e. a published review paper).
    • Experience and knowledge on the topic of public transit operations.
    • Demonstrated experience in transportation quantitative analysis.
    • GIS experience is desired.
    • Excellent written and oral communication in English.
    • Demonstrated capability to work effectively in an inter-disciplinary team environment.
