Department summary

The Project Management Office is responsible for the delivery of facilities based projects, including contributions in the planning, initiation, execution, turnover, and close out of projects.

Position summary

Reporting to the Manager, Project Delivery, the Project Manager (PM) has the overall responsibility for the successful planning, execution, monitoring, control and close-out of the project. This includes all planning, design, construction and turn-over processes of specific capital and renovation projects assigned to them on behalf of the University of Alberta. This oversight advances through all work phases including the conceptual developmental stage through to final completion, ensuring efficiencies as well as compliance with defined project goals and objectives are achieved.

This responsibility encompasses the coordination of project design, planning and implementation, procurement of contract services, cost estimating, budgeting, cost control, change management, scheduling, risk management and mitigation, safety and regulatory compliance and effective communications with clients, external contractors and key stakeholders within and external to the University.

Duties

Project Managers at the University of Alberta are responsible for the overall delivery of facilities projects, including:

  • Strategic Planning, Implementation, and Process Management
  • Project Control - Including Scope, Cost, Quality, Resources, Communications, Risk, Procurements, and Stakeholders
  • Administration and Reporting
  • Project Communication

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in engineering, project management, construction, business, or other related fields.
  • Five years' experience in related design and construction activities, including managing project deliverables.

Skills

  • This position requires possession of financial analysis and reporting skills, a high degree of related problem solving skills, negotiations and superior written and oral skills is required.

Knowledge

  • Position requires knowledge of mechanical, electrical, architectural and structural building systems as well as knowledge of the legislation and application of building and related codes, including U of A policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of contract law and construction processes is also required as are good computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The following education, skills, and knowledge are considered an asset:

  • Certification as a Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Demonstrated experience with Lean in design and construction methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)
