This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement , this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $74,084 to $101,888. This position has an approximate appointment end date of March 31, 2025.
Location: Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Department/Faculty Summary
The Boreal Avian Modelling (BAM) Project is an international scientific collaboration engaged in novel research that supports evidence-based decision-making in migratory bird management and conservation across North America. BAM’s mission is to develop the best possible predictive bird-habitat models from existing data, with the goal of meeting immediate conservation needs and informing future research and monitoring efforts. BAM’s central location is in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta but has partners across North America.
Position Summary
The Program Leader will ensure that the BAM project runs efficiently by providing high-level leadership, including strategic, scientific, administrative, and financial support. This position acts as a liaison between the Steering Committee and the broader BAM network, which requires regular coordination and interaction with key partners, funders, and external organizations. This position will participate in research projects, grant writing and scientific communications. The position is a two-year term with a high probability of renewal.
Duties
- Development, implementation, and dissemination of core research projects
- Coordination of BAM members
- Work plan development and implementation,
- Partner liaison
- Grant preparation, management and reporting
- Internal policy development and implementation, and coordination of project communications.
Minimum Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in ecological sciences, natural resource management, or related fields;
- Experience in project management and team supervision;
- Demonstrated abilities in ecological and/or conservation research; and
- A strong interest in building collaborations to advance the conservation of birds and boreal forests in Canada.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience publishing peer-reviewed science are essential
Preferred Qualifications
Non-essential assets for the position are familiarity with the sectors and agencies involved in boreal forest conservation and management, strong quantitative skills, and fluency in spoken and written French. This position is likely to require travel within North America.
