Position summary

As a Production Artist, you will support a wide array of design-related projects within the Digital + Creative Centre of Expertise. Your tasks are varied, from diligently applying design changes and recommendations, to ensuring preflight files are immaculately accurate before publication. On any given day you might update existing pieces of creative, create a suite of resized assets from one main asset, update web graphics, or provide input on print production needs. You are the ultimate brand champion, ensuring every pixel is in place across all mediums, both digital and traditional. You live in the details with a high standard for quality control.

Reporting to the Creative Director, you can expect to be part of a skilled creative department staffed with art directors, graphic designers, copywriters, videographers, motion designers and more. This is new at the U of A, so you should also expect a veritable whirlwind of learning, growing, creating, and supporting each other on our collective journey to “build the university of tomorrow.”

Duties

  • Work collaboratively with the design and digital teams to interpret and translate concepts and mockups into final print and digital files for marketing campaigns, social media, websites, advertising, merchandise, swag, magazines, brochures, posters, event collateral, signage, presentations and reports
  • Make text revisions and carefully proofread own work
  • Perform assignments with accuracy and a high attention to detail
  • Produce and format a wide variety of user-friendly templates based on existing designs
  • Set up extensive and efficient stylesheets when required, to ensure that formatting and layouts remain consistent and on-brand
  • Create charts, graphs and tables based on design concepts and mockups
  • Source images within the university’s digital asset management system or subscription services, based on parameters provided by design and digital teams
  • Work with designers and project managers to ensure workflow requirements are met
  • Recommend and help identify concepts that align with the university’s visual identity
  • Assist with solving technical problems that may arise as a result of design challenges
  • Recommend and help identify improvements to existing processes and file setups
  • Liaise with designers, writers, editors and stakeholders to address project needs 
  • Prepare files for print and digital production ensuring accurate colour, separations, image resolution, bleeds, sizes and formats
  • Collect, troubleshoot and upload print-ready or digital files to vendors
  • Manage and archive project files and digital assets
  • Adapt to last minute changes and ad hoc assignments with flexibility and a positive mindset  
  • Support colleagues with the more advanced features of programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, Google Docs and Slides, MS Word and PowerPoint.
  • Stays on top of changes to graphic design and production standards and ensures all jobs meet these standards
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate clearly and effectively
  • An active listener who is driven to understand what’s being said and can reflect and respond tactfully and constructively

Minimum Qualifications

  • BDes or related education and experience relevant to the role is required
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a production artist working in a creative team or agency
  • Highly proficient in Adobe CS InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat as well as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Working knowledge of Google Sheets, Slides and Docs is an asset
  • Knowledge and experience in the end-to-end printing process
