PROJECT: Gene discovery and synthetic biology towards production of high-value alkaloids

POSITION 1: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY

Starting salary: CA$ 40,000 -45,000(negotiable based on experience and performance)

Hours per week: 35

Duration: 12 months (renewable for an additional 24 months depending on funding)

Job description: The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research into the metabolic engineering of alkaloid biosynthetic pathways from plants in synthetic biology chassis such as baker’s yeast, bacteria, and tobacco plant. Duties include experimental design, method development (molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics), data collection, and data interepreation and presentation. The postdoctoral researcher will be working independently and in team under the supervision of the line manager (Dr. Thu-Thuy Dang), and collaborating with colleagues from other research groups.

Qualifications:

  • PhD (fully awarded or expected within … months) in one of the following disciplines: biochemistry, molecular biology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, plant biology, and microbiology. (essential )
  • Knowledge in specialized (secondary) metabolism (essential ).
  • Demonstrated expertise in gene/genome editing, metabolic engineering, biochemistry, or molecular biology. (essential )
  • Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in analytical chemistry including the uses of LC-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, or NMR (essential ).
  • Proven track record in scientific writing and publication (essential ).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team (essential ).
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral) (essential ).
  • Ability to follow and generate experimental instructions/standard operating procedures (essential ).
  • Willingness to work outside standard work hours when necessary (essential ).
  • Ability to undertake occasional travels for collaboration and scientific meetings (essential ).
