Department/Unit Chemistry
Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
Jointly appointed by the Macdonald and Chitnis groups, the successful candidate will investigate the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of heavy p-block element compounds featuring rationally-designed multidentate ligands. The available projects stem from recent work in both groups (see DOIs: 10.1002/cplu.202200244, 10.26434/chemrxiv-2022-w9qvx, 10.1002/chem.201904361, 10.1039/c8sc01682h, 10.1039/c9dt00995g, 10.1021/acs.inorgchem.9b00419) and will explore both fundamental and applied aspects of the prepared systems. We are particularly interested in the discovery of molecules exhibiting unusual electronic structure, high molecular charge, and catalytic potential.
Under the supervision of Dr. Saurabh Chitnis and Dr. Chuck Macdonald, the successful candidate will receive training in state-of-the-art synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational techniques while developing their own mentorship portfolio through supervision of undergraduate researchers and collaborations with MSc and PhD students. The successful candidate will participate in regular joint group meetings and, subject to availability of funds, be provided a travel stipend for attending national and/or international conferences to disseminate research findings. The successful candidate will also be responsible for actively participating in routine technical maintenance and/or installation of new laboratory equipment.
