Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Metabolite Profiling & Postharvest Physiology in Blueberry)
A two-year postdoctoral research position is available starting September 1, 2019 in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Drs. Simone Castellarin and Anubhav Pratap Singh. The Castellarin Laboratory (castellarin-lab.landfood.ubc.ca ) is affiliated with the Wine Research Centre, the UBC Mass Spectrometry Facility, and the Applied Biology and Plant Science Programs. Dr. Anubhav Pratap Singh’s Food Process Engineering Laboratory (fpel.landfood.ubc.ca ) is affiliated with the UBC Food Science Program.
The postdoctoral fellow will make a vital contribution to the funded project entitled: Assessing Harvest and Post Harvest Fruit Quality in Blueberry. The project aims at selecting high-quality varieties that better tolerate postharvest storage and have an increased shelf life, as well as at developing new post-harvest and storage techniques that improve shelf life. The research will be applied in focus and carried out in collaboration to the BC Blueberry Council; however, it is also expected to increase basic understanding of fruit metabolism and its changes associated to postharvest storage and treatments. Specific research activities include i) developing methodologies for large scale metabolite profiling using GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and LC-QTOF platforms, ii) using these methodologies to profile and assess the evolution of specialized metabolites (e.g., flavonoids and volatile organic compounds) in new blueberry varieties as well as in major commercial varieties, during postharvest storage and in response to novel postharvest techniques (pulsed light and modified atmosphere storage), and iv) developing active packaging solutions for improving the postharvest quality and safety. The postdoc will communicate between the Project Leaders, Simone Castellarin and the Anubhav Pratap Singh, and with two graduate students.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a related field, e.g. Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Plant Sciences. Experience in in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry is required. Very strong communication skills (oral and written) are required. Student mentorship is expected.

Selection Criteria: The selection of the candidate will be based on the following criteria: 1) a PhD in an appropriate field of research, 2) a sound knowledge of and demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry, 3) experience in phytochemistry and/or postharvest physiology, 4) ability to conduct high quality independent and innovative research with the ability to carry work through to publication, 5) very strong verbal and written communication skills, 6) ability to work effectively both in an independent role and collaboratively with others in a diverse academic setting.
