The Land & Food Lab (led by Prof. Graham MacDonald) at McGill University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join an international collaborative project as part of the Global Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and the Environment (NICCEE). The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to developing new datasets to improve the quantification of nitrogen flows in agri-food and energy systems in North America. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team based at the Joint Global Change Research Institute and the Appalachian Laboratory at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in the United States on their development of a nitrogen module in the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM). The McGill-based postdoctoral researcher will have a particular focus on synthesizing and harmonizing existing subnational data (including through stakeholder engagement) needed to better represent agriculture management practices, food processing, livestock production, and wastewater generation/treatment in modeling nitrogen flows across Canada and the United States. A possibility also exists for the selected candidate to work with stakeholders and other team members to design scenarios for the assessment of socioeconomic and environmental impacts of technology change related to nitrogen, such as green ammonia production and use.

NICCEE ( https://niccee.org/ ), spearheaded by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) with key partners in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, is jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, UK Research and Innovation, and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. As a partner institution of NICCEE, the Joint Global Change Research Institute represents a collaboration between the University of Maryland and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (see details https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/jgcri). The Institute focuses on quantitative modeling of Human-Earth systems, primarily to advance the science and inform the policy discussions pertaining to climate change mitigation and adaptation. One notable development from the Institute is GCAM, an integrated assessment model of energy, land, water, and atmosphere.

TERM Initial appointment is for one year, with a possibility of extension for a second year based on performance.

START DATE The position is scheduled to start on June 1, 2024. However, start date could be flexible within 2024 (within 3-6 months).

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION The successful applicant should hold a PhD in geography, agriculture/agronomy, environmental science, sustainability science, or a related subject received within the last 5 years.

QUALIFYING SKILLS We seek a candidate with experience working with large quantitative datasets, including familiarity with programming environments such as R or Python. Experience with geospatial analysis and/or systems modelling around agriculture/food/energy applications, as well as experience working with stakeholders, would be an asset. 

WORK LOCATION The work will be based in the Department of Geography at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
