PLSC Pulse Technician, Plant Sciences

Primary Purpose: The Pulse Crop Pathology Program at the Crop Development Centre, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Saskatchewan requires a Research Technician who will work as part of the research team to support pathology research and resistance breeding for the development of improved pulse crop varieties.



Nature of Work: The research technician will report to the Pulse Crop Pathologist and senior research staff. They will focus on producing high-quality plants and seed as well as carrying out plant pathology experiments.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities: 
Responsibilities will include field, phytotron, greenhouse and laboratory research including isolation, diagnosis and preservation of pathogens, setting up and maintenance of experiments, preparation and application of pathogen inoculum, disease assessments and basic data management, harvest and sample processing, as well as other plant pathology-related activities. The technician may need to travel to off-station sites. The technician will assist in training and supervision of summer staff. Must be able to lift up to and including 25 kg.
Education: An undergraduate degree or diploma in agriculture, plant biology or a related field of study is required.
Licenses: Candidates must hold a valid class 5 driver’s license.  Candidates should have or be willing to obtain WHMIS, First Aid and CPR training.
Experience: Experience in research, plant growth/maintenance and microbiology will be an asset.
Skills: Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language.  Proficiency with common computer programs will be an asset.  This position requires a motivated, reliable and well organized person able to work in a multi-disciplinary group environment.
