Research-funded, full-time, position located at Macdonald Campus (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue), to support a researcher in Department of Plant Science. Position is 100% research-funded.


Position Summary:

Coordinates and conducts greenhouse and field activities in support of the pulse breeding and genetics program.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Participates in projects and experiments in the field of plant science. Discusses the orientation and technical demands of the projects. Reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Assumes responsibility for the technical aspects in the execution of these projects.
(ii) Performs technical duties in a plant science facility including greenhouses and growth chambers.  Monitors usage of the facility.
(iv) Selects or modifies methodology in order to ensure optimal growing conditions, including variables such as temperature, photoperiod, irrigation, nutrients, etc.
(v) Acquires, propagates and maintains plant collections. Monitors pest control measures. Coordinates provision of plants and plant samples for projects.
(vi) Compiles experimental and analytical data. Prepares reports. Maintains records and files.
(vii) Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
(ix) Maintains equipment and performs repairs. Arranges for servicing.
(x) Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and materials.

Candidates must expect that during the field season, work is weather-dependent.   Weekly schedule may therefore vary, to include work on Saturday and/or Sunday.   Hours exceeding 35 hours per week will be banked and compensated with paid time off, to be scheduled throughout the season during non-critical periods as approved by supervisor. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
-- DEC III (Horticulture or Farm Management) 
-- 2 years of related experience
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

University degree preferred, in discipline of crop science or bioresource engineering. 

Demonstrated knowledge of farming and crop production.  Demonstrated experience with field operations, operating field phenotyping equipment and motorized vehicles, and data capture cameras.    

Experience in an agricultural research facility would be an asset. Familiarity with technical aspects of plant breeding and genetics highly desirable.   High attention to detail essential.

Must possess a class 5 driver’s license.  In association with field trial establishment and maintenance, possess a C8 pesticide applicator’s license or above, or possess ability to obtain such license.

Basic computer skills (e-mail, MS software).  Ability to maintain a database; basic coding experience would be an asset.   Must demonstrate interest in working with technologically advanced electronic instruments/components.  Exhibit desire and flexibility to learn new skills.

Proven interpersonal and organizational skills.  Ability to coordinate work activity and follow up with stakeholders.  

Ability to ensure cleanliness and organization in an agricultural research facility.

Languages:   English spoken & written.   Ability to speak French is an asset. 


Minimum Education and Experience:


DEC III - Horticulture 2 Years Related Experience / DEC III - Farm Management


Hourly Salary:


(MUNACA Level 09) $22.25 - $30.68
