Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Technical Services, and being supervised by the Security Systems Supervisor, the Physical Security Specialist conducts risk and vulnerability assessments for the University to identify and recommends physical security measures to safeguard personnel; to prevent unauthorized access to equipment, facilities, material, and/or documents; and to safeguard property against sabotage, damage, and theft. The incumbent
designs, implements, and coordinates integrated physical security systems that include access
control, duress alarms, intrusion detection systems, and video camera systems (CCTV). The incumbent also provides security systems administration and other IT functions for Campus Safety Services (CSS). The incumbent ensures that the CSS Communication Centre (Dispatchers) receives accurate and reliable messages from the various security systems employed across campus and performs other related duties as required/assigned. The incumbent is required to be “on-call” after normal business hours, including weekends and
University holidays, to provide technical supports to the on-duty Shift Manager or designate and Communications Centre Operator (Dispatcher) and respond to any disruption or failures in the typical operation of CSS monitored card access system, CCTVs, duress and intrusion alarm
systems, fire alarm system, two-way radios, telephones and other related computer/security
system equipment.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Must have knowledge of current technologies providing efficient and effective access control, asset protection, CCTV, duress/panic notification, intrusion detection, and loss prevention processes in order to develop integrated security systems that will provide maximum protection and supports to the client department’s on-going operations and the University’s mission.
• Must be able to read, understand, and evaluate site/facility engineering drawings for potential security deficiencies and to design and implement installation security systems for new facilities.
• Must be able to understand the work and functions of the client department/work area(s) and possess the ability to troubleshoot and propose solutions to address problems that may exist between physical security requirements and departmental work functions.
• Must be capable of conducting surveys and assessing function/use of space to identify critical or vulnerable facilities and recognize potential threats; possess excellent inter-personal communication/customer service skills to communicate with various University staff, public users, partners, and suppliers.
• Must possess the ability to effectively supervise people, contractors, and projects and have a good working knowledge of all codes and standards affecting the administration and installation of physical security systems.
• Must be capable of working alone with limited supervision.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Three (3) year college diploma or university degree in Electronics or Computer Systems Technology with a concentration in security systems application/management.
• The incumbent must have completed certifications in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Levels 1 and 2.
o Certification as a Physical Security Professional (PSP) or a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) through ASIS International or other security industry designations will be considered strong assets for persons occupying this position.
• Seven (7) years’ work experience in design and implementation of integrated security
systems and two (2) years’ work experience in conducting physical security/risk and vulnerability assessments.
