Department summary

The Clinical Islet Transplant Program is part of the Department of Surgery which has 15 divisions and offers programs in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies.  The department also includes many other research groups who contribute to cutting edge advancement in areas such as transplantation, joint preservation and regeneration and surgical simulation technology.  Founded in 1922, the department has been a leader in its field, striving to achieve a balance between technology and the human element that defines the art of surgery.  The overarching mission of the department is to restore health through surgical intervention, and to remember that patient dignity and comfort are integral to overall health.  Further information on the department can be found at www.ualberta/ca/surgery.

Position summary

The Operations Director, Research, of this internationally recognized diabetes research program will be responsible for senior level leadership and management of the day to day operations of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program and will contribute to the growth and stability of the program.

Duties

Key Responsibilities:

  • Staff management of clinical research team members including recruitment, supervision, mentoring and work distribution
  • Together with the Clinical Islet Transplant Program Director this position will be responsible for the overall management of the grant application process including identifying funding opportunities, designing, writing and editing funding applications and clinical trial protocols, contract review and negotiation.
  • Position will initiate and manage contracts in partnership with Research Office at the University of Alberta
  • Position will ensure compliance with all applicable legislation including American and Canadian human subject protection, and all applicable University of Alberta policies and protocols including those for research administration, contract management and risk management
  • Will manage and implement clinical and translational studies arising from the team’s Research activities
  • Will be responsible for the overall financial management of the unit.
  • Will represent the Clinical Islet Transplant Program Director and program as needed when dealing with external international academic research collaborators, funding agencies and regulatory authorities as we as internally within the University of Alberta community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MBA or considerable senior management experience and education required
  • 5 years research project management experience that includes significant experience in budget development, preferably in national or international clinical research setting
  • 5 years’ experience writing scientific grant applications, research publications
  • Substantial management experience in coaching, developing, maintaining relations, leading and motivating teams
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with ability to work independently
  • Strength in planning and implementing progressive strategies
  • Senior level experience with university policies and procedures, clinical research regulation, team management and research project management
  • Ability to build partnerships, work collaboratively cross-functionally, and work effectively with virtual teams and diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in applicable discipline preferred, Master of Science will be considered with significant senior level experience and education
  • Project management experience would be preferred

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement , this position has an approximate appointment of two years and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $100,543 to $138,247.
