Position Description:
The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a clinician-educator or clinician-scientist at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Clinical). The successful candidate will also be eligible to be the Division Director of Pediatric Palliative Medicine. The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine, and our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The MCH is a 150-bed hospital with a 12-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 8-bed step down unit, a 52- bed Neonatal Intensive Care unit, and 56 pediatric inpatient beds. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.
The Pediatric Palliative Medicine Team is comprised of four physicians, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a bereavement follow up coordinator, with additional access to social services and spiritual care. PACT provides interdisciplinary care to infants, children, adolescents, and selected young adults with serious advanced illness and their families within the McGill University hospital network both in hospital and at home. The first Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada pediatric palliative care-training program in Quebec was approved in 2023 and will be an integral part of the team’s academic mission with the first fellow to begin in 2025.
Clinician-scientists are also members of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) joining one of the eight active research programs at the RI-MUHC. Fundamental scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Translational Biology, while clinical scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation.
Job Duties:
The successful candidate will have a principal role in the Pediatric Palliative Medicine/Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) as an active physician member of the Dept. of Pediatrics at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC. Administrative duties as Division Director are expected to require approximately 15% effort.
Research and other academic activities are encouraged and supported. Supervision of undergraduate and graduate trainees and participation in the Pediatric Palliative Medicine subspecialty training program is expected. Physicians in the Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine are also expected to contribute to our interdisciplinary education mission, supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners.
The successful academic clinician candidate will be expected to divide their time as follows:
1)Clinical Service (0.65- 0.75 FTE): The focus of clinical work will be in Pediatric Palliative Medicine with additional opportunities in the Division of General Pediatrics or another division in the Department of Pediatrics, depending on training and expertise;
2)Administration of the Division (0.15 FTE)
3)Education/Research/Other Academic Commitments (0.1- 0.2 FTE): participation in departmental and divisional academic activities such as research, teaching, quality improvement, and program development is required. Two priority areas include Perinatal Palliative Care and the Royal College accredited Pediatric Palliative Medicine training program.
Candidates interested in a clinician-scientist position will be expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research, with the remaining time devoted to clinical service and administration (25%-50%). Clinician-scientists are expected to apply for salary support from the FRQS and to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Candidates must:
- hold an MD degree or equivalent;
- have postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics, and have completed specialty training with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
- hold, or be eligible for, licensure to practice medicine from the Collège des médecins du Québec ;
- applicants to a clinician-scientist position are expected to have a minimum of 2 years of dedicated research training; a postgraduate degree (e.g. MSc or PhD) is an asset;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
