Position summary

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking applications for a part-time (0.5 FTE), Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) position in the MD Program for a maternity leave coverage. Working closely with the departmental chair and clerkship coordinator for Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as MD program leadership, this position supports MD students in their clinical learning environment at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH).

Duties:

  • Nurse educator daily activities include working with the students with a focus on case room activities.
  • Supports student's learning in completing histories and other documentation.
  • May attend deliveries with the students as the second nurse, debriefing afterwards to provide for enhanced learning
  • Completes informal and just in time teaching as appropriate
  • Working closely with the rotation coordinator and physician educators, ensures learning objectives are met for the obstetrics and gynecology core rotation
  • Provides instruction to MD Students which include but are not limited to the following settings: clinical teaching (core; selective; elective); experiential learning; classroom-based teaching; and seminars.
  • Ensures availability for learner consultation within and outside of scheduled teaching or clinical experiences
  • Participates in inter-professional teaching activities
  • Participates in scholarly teaching by remaining current and competent in Obstetrics and Gynecology content, core rotation design and performance in the clinical setting
  • Other clearly defined teaching activities as appropriate and assigned and agreed to at the time of appointment or during subsequent annual assignments
  • Indirect activities that facilitate students progressing through the program
  • Engages in teaching-related administrative duties
  • Those activities that directly support teaching and teaching development at a program level and/or relate to the development, delivery and evaluation of the professional program (i.e. program-facing). ATS Members may be expected to participate in teaching-related service activities early in their career and take increased responsibility (such as Committee Chair) as they progress through the ranks.
  • Activities may include provision of service to the discipline of the staff member; participation in the governance of the University, the Faculty and the Department; and dissemination of knowledge to the general public by making available the staff member's expertise and knowledge of the discipline

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse in Obstetrics and Gynecology with current CARNA membership
  • As this is a clinical learning environment, it is essential that both patient and student safety are maintained while teaching occurs.
  • As all decisions in relation to orientation, mentoring and teaching of students in a clinical environment are provided with a high level of autonomy, the incumbent must be able to work independently under limited supervision
  • Recent experience in University teaching in a clinical setting
  • Ability to employ varied teaching strategies in a clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology setting
  • Ability to support the assessment of student performance
  • Ability to provide constructive student feedback effectively and in a timely manner
  • Capable of self-evaluation of clinical teaching
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Critical thinking and organizational ability
  • Problem solving skills and an ability to handle challenging student situations
  • Technically proficient in the computer environment and a working knowledge of various applications
  • Able to work effectively within teams/committees and provide constructive feedback to colleagues

Preferred Qualification

  • This person would ideally be a case room nurse, facilitating the connection of students and nursing in the clinical environment.

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement .
