The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) invites applications from qualified candidates for an NSERC Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) appointment in Applied Earth Systems Modelling and Climate Change Science, whose research will link climate scenarios with climate change impacts, adaptation, and planning. The chair will be at the rank of assistant or associate professor, beginning July 1, 2023. Appointment is conditional on the approval of the application by the CRC Secretariat.

This chair will engage in cutting-edge research to generate new knowledge about the climate system at a multitude of scales across Canada’s vast landscape and provide science-based information to support climate change adaptation. This position will also help to bridge climate modelling and ongoing DGES research on climate change impacts on Canadian communities, Canada’s cryosphere, agricultural sector, and hydrological and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. Specifically, we imagine attracting a scholar capable of using climate models to inform adaptation projects – translating current and future climate change into biological/physical impacts. A scholar working at this interface would seek to co-develop projects with other researchers, policy-makers, and agencies.

Applicants should have a PhD in Geography or a related field. They must also have demonstrated ability or strong potential to maintain an independent and externally-funded research program, recruit and supervise graduate and undergraduate student research, and develop and teach undergraduate and graduate classes in support of DGES’s programs.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. DGES  is a dynamic community of award-winning scholars with collaborative and externally funded research clusters in northern studies, watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry, cryospheric science, societal impacts of the climate crisis, colonialism, urban studies and social and environmental injustice, for example.  We employ field-based methods, geomatics, and modeling approaches to carry out discovery and community-engaged research.  Our cross-appointed and adjunct faculty contribute expertise in biology, health science, Canadian and Indigenous studies, women’s studies, public policy, and more. DGES offers undergraduate BA and BSc programs in Geography, Geomatics, and Environmental Studies.  At the graduate level, we offer research-based MA, MSc, and PhD programs in Geography with the opportunity to participate in collaborative specializations such as Data Science, Climate Change, and Political Economy. DGES also hosts course-based Master programs (MA/MSc) in Northern Studies.

This position requires:

• a PhD in Geography or a related field (Carleton University requirement);
• a track record of high-quality and peer-reviewed research in Earth Systems Modelling and Climate Change Science;
• a demonstrated ability or potential to attract external research funding;
• the capacity to attract, supervise, and mentor graduate students;
• a demonstrated ability or potential to develop projects with other researchers, government, and other agencies; and
• demonstrated teaching excellence and the potential for outstanding teaching contributions in the field of physical geography at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
