Job Summary
The Medical Sciences program is a broad, interdisciplinary preparatory program that introduces students to subjects in medicine, science, and arts and social sciences. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Medical Sciences, the Medical Sciences Indigenous Cohort Advisor will consult, create, and deliver programming to overcome the barriers most often faced by students in the Maritime Indigenous community.
Key Responsibilities
  • Consult with the Maritime and Dalhousie Indigenous communities to build relationships, identify key barriers, and inform and recruit prospective students.
  • Develop targeted culturally and academically appropriate support systems based on consultations.
  • Develop and distribute program information packages and orientation events for new students.
  • Oversee daily activities of the program, interacting directly with students, evaluating student activities, resolving student inquiries, issues, and problems, and advocating for students.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and analyze student success.
  • Work with Cohort Committees, Program Coordinator of Medical Sciences, Assistant Dean of Medical Sciences, and other relevant senior academic administration.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred, and three to five years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Existing relationships and demonstrated ability to work in and with Maritime Indigenous communities as well as demonstrated ability to leverage those relationships in a professional context is required.  Knowledge of the Indigenous experience and issues and challenges of concern to Indigenous people is required as well as knowledge of current resources available to indigenous students and experience in student advising.  Excellent communication skills (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills; fluency in Indigenous language(s) is an asset. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills, along with the ability to problem-solve, take initiative, and meet deadlines is required.
