Job Summary
The Medical Sciences program is a broad, interdisciplinary preparatory program that introduces students to subjects in medicine, science, and arts and social sciences. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Medical Sciences, the Medical Sciences African Nova Scotian Cohort Advisor will consult, create, and deliver programming to overcome the barriers most often faced by students in the Maritime African Nova Scotian community.
Key Responsibilities
  • Consult with the African Nova Scotian and Dalhousie communities to build relationships, identify key barriers, and inform and recruit prospective students for the Medical Sciences Program.
  • Develop targeted culturally and academically appropriate support systems for students admitted through the cohort based on consultations.
  • Develop and distribute program information packages and orientation events for new students.
  • Oversee daily activities of the program, interacting directly with students, evaluating student activities, resolving student inquiries, issues, and problems, and advocating for students.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and analyze student success.
  • Work with Cohort Committees, Program Coordinator of Medical Sciences, Assistant Dean of Medical Sciences, and other relevant senior academic administration.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred, and three to five years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Existing relationships and demonstrated ability to work in and with the African Nova Scotian community as well as demonstrated ability to leverage those relationships in a professional context is required.  Knowledge of the African Nova Scotian experience, issues, and challenges is required as well as knowledge of current resources available to African Nova Scotian students, and experience in student advising.  Excellent communication skills (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills are required. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills along with the ability to problem-solve, take initiative, and meet deadlines is required.
