Carleton is looking for a high performing individual to play a new key role on its communications team. The successful candidate will oversee a team that delivers and evaluates university-wide digital and social communications strategies, campaigns and properties. The position is ideal for someone seeking to coach and mentor others to achieve excellence while delivering outstanding results through collaboration with communications and marketing staff.

The Department of University Communications reports directly to the President’s Office. It provides the university community with strategic direction, advice and support to enhance Carleton’s reputation for academic excellence, research and exceptional student experience. It also supports and co-ordinates a highly effective network of communications professionals in programs, faculties, schools and departments.

This critical management role will provide overall leadership on website and university-wide digital and social communications strategies and emerging communications technologies to increase reputation and brand awareness and ensure consistent messaging.

The role involves providing strategic counsel and support to executives and senior leadership, deans, faculty and staff.

The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge in digital and social communications, with proven experience managing, monitoring and evaluating social media activities. The role requires an ability to align different institutional objectives with the university brand, strong planning skills, experience working with a variety of programs and analytics, and an ability to manage stressful situations in a positive, solution-oriented way.

The Manager, Digital Communications is a new full-time continuing position. The full salary range is provided, however the starting salary will be between the minimum and the mid-point ($86,894 - $99,927) and based on the selected candidate's qualifications and other compensation factors. Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides overall leadership on website and university-wide digital and social communications strategies and emerging communications technologies to increase reputation and brand awareness and ensure consistent messaging.


The incumbent most possess the following qualifications:
▪ Knowledge of the social technology universe, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, blogs, wikis, RSS, social bookmarking, discussion forums and community software.
▪ Knowledge of web content management systems, including HTML and WordPress.
▪ Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
▪ Knowledge of office productivity software and databases, Internet browsers and search engines, discipline-specific software, enterprise software and technology devices.
▪ Knowledge of SEO, SEM, growth tracking, ROI, web-related data analysis and other metrics.
▪ Knowledge of communications, public relations, marketing, social media processes.
▪ Knowledge of university’s strategic priorities and goals, as well as policies and procedures.
▪ Knowledge of DUC, as well as the broader university academic units, departments and divisions.
▪ Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the Completion of bachelors’ degree in communications, marketing, online journalism or a related field. This along with a minimum of seven years experience with a large complex organization with at least three years leading a digital marketing communications program and team.
