Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Content and Publications, the Manager, Content Strategy will be responsible for the planning, design, creation and publication of relevant content based on University Advancement’s business objectives and audiences' needs. Managing a team of writers, editors and digital communications officers, the incumbent will seek out and craft content that aligns with the University’s strategic and fundraising priorities, create and maintain University Advancement’s editorial calendar of publications, and coordinate content distribution through emails, digital newsletters and social media channels. As part of their work, the Manager, Content Strategy will build and maintain partnerships across University Advancement and McGill, including with members of the Communications and External Relations (CER) team, and Faculty-based communications officers, to ensure proper alignment and consistency between UA, University and Faculty-based messaging.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop clear and engaging content that aligns with McGill and UA’s strategic and fundraising priorities, and the needs and interests of our audience of alumni and donors

  • Lead the email and social media functions of the UA Communications team in order to ensure content is being delivered to audiences in a timely and relevant manner, while taking into consideration the demographics and functions of various social media platforms

  • Create UA’s annual editorial calendar, and ensure its implementation via weekly meetings with relevant members of the UA Communications team, and through regular check-ins with UA and McGill stakeholders

  • Work closely with UA’s data analytics specialists to track and measure the effectiveness of content campaigns in order to inform future strategies and approaches

  • Lead UA’s Communications Consortium by hosting monthly meetings with Faculty and unit-based communications leads, in order to maintain a steady and consistent exchange of ideas and information

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with members of McGill’s Communications and External Relations (CER) team to understand emerging issues and priorities at the senior administrative level, and how these can be best positioned to support University Advancement’s alumni and donor engagement strategies

  • Develop new and creative ways to share content through additional channels

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Outstanding writing skills with the flexibility and creativity to create copy to address a wide range of audiences. A demonstrated ability to create high-impact communications materials across a wide spectrum of topics. Proven ability to write and edit communications materials for a variety of platforms (print and digital). Proven experience supervising and leading teams of writers, editors and digital communications officers and creating an engaged culture. Excellent spoken and written English, as well as spoken French, and strong French reading skills, in order to review content in translation.  McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. Fluency in social media and other emerging communications platforms. Experience developing communications materials using web content management systems considered an asset. The capacity to liaise with internal and external clients and to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment. Proven talent for problem-solving. Demonstrated organization skills, with the ability to set priorities and multi-task. The demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using MS Office.

Education/Experience: Undergraduate Degree (Journalism, Communications, Digital Communications, English, History, or Liberal Arts preferred). Employment background in advancement communications, marketing communications or journalism is preferred.
