Reporting to the Dean, Alberta School of Business, the Manager, Careers and Work Integrated Learning, is responsible for a team which consists of a career educators/coaches, internship and coop coordinators, work integrated learning coordinators, and support staff. Serves as an expert advisor to academic leadership, faculty, staff and/or the general public on program/ service policy and process.

The Manager provides professional and managerial expertise and know-how to the development, maintenance and operation of the Alberta School of Business Careers and Work Integrated Learning Centre. As a University leader, the incumbent translates their strategic vision into operational/action plans for their staff, thereby providing a direct line of sight to their accountabilities.

Duties

Strategic Resource

  • Oversees strategy for the School of Business Careers and Work-Integrated Learning office, on behalf of both undergraduate BCom and graduate MBA students.
  • Assists academic leadership with planning for the specific service.
  • Completes environment scanning and assesses opportunities and risks related to the service. Sees connections, patterns or trends in the information available and identifies their implications.
  • Creates partnerships with employers and other partners for optimal engagement across careers and work-integrated learning programs.
  • Regularly and systematically challenges the status quo to identify new or improved opportunities. Makes recommendations for the future development of a current or proposed program or service. Advises leadership on options, recommendations and implementation for new programs and services.

Managerial Expertise

  • Clearly communicates strategic objectives to own staff. Works with staff to define operational and short-term action plans that align with these objectives.
  • Identifies operational challenges. Uses continuous improvement methodology to manage work and streamline processes. Evaluates current business processes for efficiencies. Recommends changes.
  • Manages and provides oversight for all administration including financials, staffing, scheduling, problem-solving, and inter-departmental coordination.
  • In conjunction with a Service Partner (Finance), manages the finances for the Career and Work Integrated Learning unit. Accounts for the assigned budget. Completes yearly and long-term budget planning for career services.
  • Is open and interested in new ideas and searches for new methods of doing things. Models innovation, flexibility and resilience for staff.
  • Provides reports on co-op placement and career outcomes for AACSB and external survey purposes.
  • Maintains CAFCE accreditation to ensure quality of Co-op program.
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing communication and information sharing with other School of Business departments including the Dean’s office, Undergraduate and MBA programs, academic departments, etc.

Talent Manager/Coach

  • Regularly advises, guides and coaches staff to support continuous learning and performance optimization.
  • Identifies, acquires, manages and supports collective and individual talent. Proactively identifies and plans for future talent needs.
  • Works towards establishing a diverse workforce reflective of the broader community by identifying and working to remove barriers to access.
  • Accurately identifies competency requirements for a job and assesses individual’s strengths and challenges to ensure the right person is matched with a position
  • Creates an environment where diverse ideas, perspectives, and achievements are recognized, rewarded and celebrated.

Issue Manager

  • Identifies and recommends responses to emerging issues that affect the program or service. Uses data and evidence to inform decision making. Involves the right people in decision making. Escalates decisions that are beyond scope of accountability or those that will set precedent.
  • Responds to individual concerns or issues brought forward by faculty, staff, students and/or other stakeholders.  Uses expertise to interpret policy/ procedure.
  • Provides customized, situation sensitive solutions and recommendations which comply with university policy, procedure and practice.

Ambassador

  • As an internal ambassador, this role includes activities such as making presentations to students, attending Business events and meeting with School and University leaders.
  • As an external ambassador, this role includes attending association functions, attending career-related student events, and attending events/conferences related to advancing career education, cooperative education and work-integrated learning.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively more senior experience in career education, training and development, and leadership development including experience in a post-secondary or corporate environment.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with the University of Alberta academic regulations, including admissions, records, registration, evaluation and grading procedures, examinations, academic standing and appeals, and grievances.
  • Experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate students, with knowledge of adult education principles is an asset.
  • Experience initiating and leading innovation and change.
  • Ability to network with decision-makers in the Business community.
  • Ability to provide information and advice to all levels in the School of Business and external agencies.
  • Strategy, Project, Change Management, Human Resources, and Resource Management skills.
  • Outstanding customer service focus.
  • Expertise in the fields of Career Education and Counselling, Work-Integrated Learning including Experiential Learning and Cooperative Education, and on-campus recruiting.
  • Familiarity with Executive and Career Coaching processes and standards.

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement , this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits  and annual salary range of $70,667 to $117,771. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

COVID-19 Vaccination: Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 in compliance with the University’s COVID-19 Vaccination Directive. Fully Vaccinated means a status an individual achieves 14 days after having received the recommended number of doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada or the World Health Organization, and requires the individual to maintain the recommended number and type of vaccine doses as updated and required by Health Canada thereafter.
