The University of Alberta Utilities Department is seeking a Maintenance Worker for the Mechanical Utilities Operations.  The Mechanical Utilities Maintenance Worker is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Utility Services Corridor as well as the maintenance of the campus water distribution system, storm and sanitary collection system and off campus utility systems.  The Maintenance Worker participates in a rotating emergency standby schedule.

The work takes place on the University’s North Campus as well as Off-Campus sites including the University’s South Campus, UA Botanic Garden, Augustana Campus, Campus St. Jean and other smaller research sites.

Duties

  • Maintains the support systems necessary for the operation of the campus services corridor (ie. lighting, air conditioning, fire extinguishers, cleaning, washing and painting of the corridor, etc.)
  • Operates and maintains the campus domestic water distribution system as well as the campus storm and sanitary collection system
  • Performs and assists tradesmen in various tasks such as plumbing, steam fitting, and gas fitting in the maintenance and repair of pipes, sewer lines, fire hydrants, valves, filters, meters, sump pumps, and low and high voltage cables
  • Provides guidance to external contractors which includes excavators, sewer flusher and vacuum trucks
  • Inspects and repairs manholes and sanitary sewer systems including septic tanks, holding tanks, cisterns and water well treatment systems
  • Accurately reads domestic water, natural gas, chilled water and demineralized water meters on a monthly basis for billing and building efficiency purposes
  • Maintains contact with University staff such as building tenants, tradespeople, supervisors, the Health and Safety Officer, students and the general public, during emergency and planned service/construction activities

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma, preferably supplemented by one year of post-secondary education in a trade; equivalent combinations or education and experience will be considered
  • Previous experience with heavy equipment operation and Supplied Air Breathing Apparatus (SABA) is an asset
  • Previous knowledge of utilities safety, WHIMIS training, First Aid, and Fork Lift training is an asset
  • Must have working knowledge of fundamental trade practices of sewer and waterworks systems, pipe fitting and welding
  • Ability to work in a number of different environments that are comparable to industrial process plants and municipal operations
  • Must have good communication and decision making skills
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License (non-GDL) is required
