Reporting to the Manager, Student Learning Centre & Libraries, this position supports information service duties, selector activities in addition to a wide variety of other library tasks. Duties include but are not limited to collecting and processing fines, collecting statistical data pertaining to department use and training new staff on the use of circulation/reference desk duties in the Library. In addition, the incumbent coordinates various marketing and social media initiatives for the area.
The incumbent performs library selector’s duties, acts as library liaison, or, library contact, for the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) programs, selects books and other library materials according to program needs for new acquisitions, and deselects materials for weeding.
The incumbent assists students with questions about college software and troubleshoots minor equipment problems or requests work orders if needed.
The incumbent is part of the team that performs library desk duties including circulation (borrower services) and reference services (research assistance), assists students with questions about college software and troubleshoots equipment problems or requests work orders if needed.
The incumbent will demonstrate strong leadership and relationship building skills, be goal oriented, be able to deal with conflicting priorities, has a keen eye for detail, and possesses excellent communication skills. The incumbent will also be responsible for staying current on research and assessing trends and technologies related to best practices in the field of library science.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintains integrity of patron files (updates and creates records);
Issues borrower cards to staff/student/faculty and community members not entitled to a college issued ID cards;
Processes fines, and clears encumbrances on student information system;
Provides step-by-step guidance and instruction to clients in the use of all information sources, print, audio-visual and digital within the Library or offsite (via telephone/email/face-to-face / real time chat);
Assists clients experiencing difficulties with their laptop computers and networked printers;
Trains new staff and students in duties and best practices of position;
Assisting in the administration of the Acquisitions module in the Library Services Platform;
Coordinates student placements and practicums in collaboration with the Manager;
Maintains a user-friendly webpage (guide) of updated internal policies for staff;
Performs selection duties the ACCE programs, recommending materials in all formats for purchase;
Works as a member of the Library Marketing Team assisting in the creation and distribution of social media content.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum two (2) year diploma or equivalent in Library and Information Technology;
Minimum three (3) years’ practical experience in an academic library setting including virtual reference experience;
Experience working independently within a team-based front line customer service environment;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
Successfully able to multi-task and possess a high attention to detail.
