Librarian II- Collections

Position Summary
In a manner consistent with Richmond Hill Public Library’s overall vision and purpose, this position will be responsible for collection development in all formats for a diverse and growing community. Offers support to the Manager of Collections, with the effective coordination of all tasks related to department functions. Engages the public by providing superior emerging technology/information service and reader’s advisory. Responsible for the Department in the absence of the Manager. Delivers excellent customer service in a culture of values.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • General collection development duties in digital and physical formats.
  • Provides instruction to staff and customers in the use of new technologies.
  • Co-ordinates the selection and curation of digital, print and other physical formal content and services for the Richmond Hill Public Library.
  • Works closely with the Library’s vendors through the creation of electronic material collection lists, curation of online lists of electronic materials, periodical order/renewal lists, automatic release plans and standing orders.
  • Works closely with the Local History Librarian to collect, digitize and curate unique local history and relevant, community-donated materials.
  • Provides superior emerging technology/information service and reader’s advisory to a wide range of library users.
  • Responsible for the Department in the absence of the Manager.
  • Participates on committees and interdepartmental teams, and attends relevant meetings, workshops and courses as required.
  • Responsible for observing and following all established occupational health and safety procedures, to be aware of hazards in the workplace and preventative measures taken. Takes an active part in protecting oneself, fellow staff members and library property by reporting all hazardous conditions and unsafe work procedures. Adheres to the Employee Health and Safety Manual and to the Richmond Hill Public Library Health and Safety Policy.
  • As an integral member of Collections:
    • Strives to achieve the Library’s vision and fulfill its mission, guided by the strategic plan, annual business plan and policy
    • Engages in an openly collegial manner
    • Contributes to the ongoing advancement, implementation, measurement, evaluation and improvement of library collections.
  • Assists the Manager of Collections, in organizing, monitoring, and providing collection development functions, including but not limited to:
    • Training and coaching staff
    • Monitoring workflow and modifying daily tasks as necessary
    • Acting as a resource person for staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Master of Library/Information Science Degree from an ALA accredited program or recognized equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years public library experience with a collections focus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of collection development and deselection in all formats
  • Working knowledge of the elements that make up superior public access to physical and digital formats including merchandising, current trends and resources
  • Demonstrated ability to provide superior information service to diverse library users, including instruction and assistance in the use of new technologies.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated understanding of public libraries and awareness of contemporary trends in services, programs and collections.
  • Ability to work effectively outside of traditional library activities and settings.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment, with demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Excellent communication, analystical, organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills and ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of digital archival software (e.g. Minisis-M2A), metadata management and other digital creation and curation.
  • Knowledge of collection management software.
