The Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences (CPS) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a part-time (0.8 FTE) Lecturer position for a one-year term

For more than fifty years, the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences has played an active and important role at UBC and in the greater scientific community. The Department operates the Gross Anatomy Laboratory and oversees UBC’s Body Donation Program. Both contribute exceptional and extensive educational opportunities to students in medicine, dentistry, physical and occupation therapy, biomedical engineering and select undergraduate and graduate courses. The department fosters both collaboration amongst faculty, and individual development, in creating and delivering innovative anatomical education to our students.

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to assist the faculty in the gross anatomy and neuroanatomy labs in the capacity of lab demonstrator within the MD Undergraduate Program at Vancouver-Fraser; working in conjunction with anatomy course leads across the province, prepare anatomical prosections for all sites as needed. Additional teaching and administrative responsibilities as required by the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent in a biological discipline. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, and the promise to achieve excellence in teaching. Candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills and working knowledge of modern teaching methods and supporting tools. An in-depth understanding and knowledge of human anatomy, including knowledge of anatomical structures and functions, along with proficient dissection skills are required. Previous experience in a gross anatomy lab and medical education is preferred. A demonstrated evidence of ability and commitment to teaching is essential. The successful incumbent will be expected to navigate students through the challenges and emotions associated with working with human cadavers, and do so with empathy, respect and resilience. Adherence to ethical standards and professional conduct, including respect for donors and their families, confidentiality and sensitivity to emotional aspects of working with human cadavers is essential. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse perspectives. Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or stakeholders, is valued.

The expected salary range for this position will be in the range of $75,000 - $85,000 per annum. 1) An anonymized executive summary of the applicant’s teaching philosophy, interests, effectiveness and experience (1 page). This document will reduce unconscious bias in the initial review and cannot contain references to specific articles the candidate has published, or to identifying information such as the candidate’s name, gender, specific courses taught or the name of institutions where they have studied and worked. Please address the following in your summary: a) Describe how your teaching philosophy is tailored to reach broad populations of students including your beliefs about how students learn and how they approach teaching and learning. b) Outline your prior experience in teaching, including breadth of courses you have taught, the academic level of the students you have instructed, and any new or unique teaching techniques you have employed. c) Outline any experience in creating prosections. d) Summarize your record of teaching effectiveness in terms of both quantitative and qualitative assessments, which may include student evaluations, peer evaluations, or other assessments of teaching quality.

2) The main application consisting of a letter of application expanding on the summary and detailing the applicant’s teaching interests and experience, and the commitment to professional development including any teaching workshops, conferences, or courses taken to enhance teaching and research skills. This needs to be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, and the names of three referees.
