Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Learning Spaces Project Supervisor the incumbent designs, integrates and supports Audio/Visual teaching and learning technologies for new construction and the renewal of learning spaces across campus. This includes, researching and assisting in the selection of vendors and new technologies, reviewing proposals and working with 3rd party vendors on the design and implementation of the appropriate solutions.

The Learning Spaces Systems Designer is responsible for continual proactive on-site troubleshooting as required. When technology fails, the incumbent will assess whether to replace or repair (either on site or sent to service provider). The incumbent will be responsible for documenting all troubleshooting information. Other documentation includes producing materials for training, reports, and presentations.

The Learning Spaces Systems Designer works with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, providing pragmatic solutions to time-sensitive issues. Special projects are also assigned, along with other related duties.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Working experience with the set up and installation of network controls;
• Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills, with wide-ranging experience in both audio and video for teaching environments;
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate in writing and in relaying verbal instructions to contractors, colleagues and users;
• Project management skills, including experience working within restrictive budgets and tight timelines;
• Must be able to program and work with control systems such as AMX, Crestron, Extron, or other similar systems
• Experience installing, programing and configuring audio equipment, such as Biamp DSP Mixers or similar devices;
• Experience in working with all phases of learning space installations, from initial vision to final commissioning;
• Experience working with and troubleshooting low voltage wiring;
• Experience with LAN, WAN topologies and wireless routers configuration.
• A thorough knowledge of IT control systems, digital equipment and switchers is essential in order to integrate the various components into an effective learning space.
• Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 lbs of equipment;
• Ability to operate hand and power tools, and to work safely both in the maintenance shop and onsite in learning spaces;
• Ability to properly mount (secure, level, center), heavy equipment such as monitors, projectors, speakers; and
• Able to work early mornings, evenings, overnights, and weekends as required.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of a two-year diploma as a Computer System Technician program, in or a related program, which includes multimedia equipment and applications.
• Completion of CTS-I (Certified Technology Specialist) and/or AMX courses would be considered an asset, as would training in Project Management.
• Five years’ experience with installation of digital and A/V equipment, including two years’ experience working with IT control networks.
• Experience coordinating installation projects is an asset
