Location: This role is in-person and work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Department/Faculty Summary

The mission of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology is to provide an enriched environment for research, education and training in the field of infection and immunity that links molecular mechanisms to disease, treatment and prevention.

Position Summary

This position involves participation in research in an immunology lab. The candidate will provide support and assistance for ongoing research projects by performing routine procedure, including the maintenance of a mouse colony independent, assistance in research experiments, maintaining supporting documentation and assisting in the maintenance of the laboratory space and equipment.

Duties

Animal Colony Maintenance ~20%

  • Standard husbandry, including setting up breeding cages, weaning and tagging
  • Technical procedures on live mice including tissue sampling and injections
  • Performs genotyping PCR and reporting

Assistance in Research Experiments ~70%

  • Prepares standard media solutions for the laboratory
  • Assists other members of the lab with minor steps of animal experimentation
  • Conducts simple experiments under supervision of the PI

Maintaining supporting documentation ~5%

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of animal colony
  • Chemical and biological safety inventories
  • Ensures compliance with EHS, under PI supervision
  • Aids in completion of yearly animal protocol reports

Maintaining lab space and equipment ~5%

  • Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment (cleaning, change of water, etc)
  • Responsible for general organization and tidiness of the lab

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc in immunology, cell biology or related life sciences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in immunological techniques (immunofluorescence, western blot, flow cytometry) an asset.
  • Experience with small animal research models and molecular biology is an asset.
