New fixed-term position (one-year contract) in Department of Natural Resource Sciences, located at Macdonald Campus.  Totally supported by research funds. 

JOB SUMMARY  

Carries out a variety of technical tasks in support of the Arctic Ecology Lab group (under Prof. Elliott) conducting research in a laboratory setting as well as in the field (project on conservation of Arctic seabirds).  Ensures availability and working order of equipment used in the lab and in the collection of field samples; operates analyzing equipment.   Provides guidance to students with research projects.  Verifies fund balances.  Places orders for lab supplies. 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
(i) Participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology in fields such as biochemistry, animal physiology, toxicology, microbiology, and molecular biology.
(ii) Prepares and sets up materials and equipment. Performs a variety of assays, analyses and tests on bird biological samples. Carries animal handling for sample collection.
(iii) Records results, performs calculations and compiles data. Maintains records and files.
(iv) Demonstrates the operation of apparatus or techniques.
(v) Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
(vi) Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the work area.
(vii) Maintains inventory. Purchases equipment and materials.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Experience with using the VetScan physiological analyzer, and associated physiological assays, as well as with Motus radio telemetry . Ability to pay attention to details and to follow directives.  Demonstrated organizational skills; ability to multi-task, to interact with students, to provide instruction and training, and resolve problems.  Accuracy when entering data.  Interest in the field of ecology and wildlife.  University degree in related field, as asset. Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols (WHMIS) .   Demonstrated experience with use of MS Excel and Word, with McGill's MMP and Minerva finance for fund reconciliation.  Knowledge of French and English. communication both verbally and in writing.

Hourly Salary:


(MUNACA Level F) $28.56 - $35.40
