Lab Technician

This position has an end date of 12 months from hire.

Duties

Animal husbandry (30%)

  • Ear notching as required for animal identification
  • Assist with collecting necessary samples (blood, earnotch biopsy, tail-notch biopsy) as required
  • Assist with setting up breeding cages for various mouse strains
  • Record and bring any noted animal morbidity/mortality to the immediate attention of the laboratory manager/appropriate lab staff
  • Perform animal euthanasia as appropriate under direction from the laboratory manager/appropriate lab staff/HSLAS veterinary staff
  • Work closely with appropriate laboratory staff to help perform these duties

Room monitoring and maintenance (30%)

  • Maintain room cleanliness: bench tops, cabinets, floor, cage racks, cell culture hood and incubators
  • Maintain lab inventory including chemicals, antibodies, primers, gloves and cleaning supplies
  • Waste disposal
  • Dishwashing and autoclave
  • Record and bring any room deficiencies/problems to the immediate attention of the laboratory manager
  • Work closely with appropriate laboratory staff to help perform these duties

Other related duties as required (40%)

  • Cell culture and preparation of adenoviral-associated vectoral delivery system
  • Work closely with appropriate laboratory staff to help preform these duties

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Science related field field; Degree Preferred. 
  • Successful completion of animal ethics and mouse handling courses, and HSLAS tour (through the UofA REO and HSLAS)
  • Successful completion of relevant UofA EHS courses including WHMIS, laboratory safety, chemical safety and biosafety
  • Prior experience with mouse handling/husbandry and competency to perform basic procedures including mouse identification (ear notching) and euthanasia
  • Prior experience with cell culture is an asset
