Position

This position will work in an animal housing facility for rodents and will work five consecutive days that may include weekends.The incumbent reports to the Manager of the Unit. The purpose of the work is to sustain the appropriate environmental conditions and care of laboratory animals. 

Duties

  • To maintain an appropriately clean environment for all animals assigned to the incumbent’s care.
  • To maintain adequate supplies of fresh food and water.
  • To monitor the health status of each individual animal and to euthanize animal where required (as per Veterinarian, PI or designated personnel approval).
  • To assist investigators in handling and restraining animals.
  • To maintain accurate records on a daily basis of environmental conditions (i.e. temperature, humidity and pressure).
  • To maintain accurate records on a weekly basis of number of animals housed for billing purposes.
  • To monitor the animals for the onset of clinical prion disease, record on the log book when animals become sick, and/or die.
  • To communicate any issues regarding animal health/onset of clinical prion disease to the animal facility manager as well as the specific principal investigator/designate
  • May perform various technical procedures on the animals following the approved standard operating procedures at the request of the animal facility manager and/or the specific principal investigator/designate

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of lab animal husbandry and handling or animal related activities such as veterinary hospital employment
  • Part I, Part II Training Courses and Biosafety Certification is required (provided Training on the Job)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Animal Health Technology Diploma or equivalent
