The Department of Philosophy invites applications from qualified candidates for a two-year Term appointment in Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Cognitive Science, and Philosophy of AI (including but not limited to Ethics of AI), and Moral Psychology at the rank of Instructor beginning July 1, 2023.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the ‘Language, Mind, & World’ (LMW) cluster which is one of the two areas of strength of the department. The teaching assignment will include courses such as: first year seminar (FYSM) and graduate seminar in the Philosophy and Ethics of AI, PHIL1301 World, Mind, Knowledge, PHIL2106 Information Ethics, PHIL2501 Introduction to Philosophy of Mind, PHIL2550 Moral Psychology, PHIL2540 Personal Identity and the Self, PHIL3540 Philosophy of Emotions, PHIL3501 Philosophy of Cognitive Science.

The successful candidate will participate fully in the life of the department, including administration and will have the opportunity to help the department create new courses in philosophy and ethics of AI.


About the Academic Unit:

The Department of Philosophy (https://carleton.ca/philosophy/ ) combines award-winning teaching with excellence in research. The department’s strengths are in two main areas: moral, social, and political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind, language, and knowledge. Several members of the department are active researchers in the history of philosophy. The department has close ties to the Department of Cognitive Science (https://carleton.ca/cognitivescience/ ) and is the administrative home of the Ph.D. program in Ethics and Public Affairs (https://carleton.ca/ethics/ )


Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in philosophy or cognitive science is strongly preferred. An M.A. in philosophy is required. Strong background in artificial intelligence is expected. Candidates should be able to demonstrate teaching excellence, whether as part of their Ph.D. program or otherwise.
