About the opportunity | The School of Social Work in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Health invites applications from qualified candidates who identify as Indigenous, having demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous and decolonizing scholarship (from a combination of traditional and academic contexts) for an Instructor position at 50% FTE over a three-year limited term contract. Dalhousie University is comprised of 6,000 faculty and staff amongst its 13 faculties. Current enrollment is 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students. As part of Canada’s U15 research-intensive group, Dalhousie is an influential driver of the region’s intellectual, social, and economic development. It is the largest university in Atlantic Canada and is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq in the heart of Halifax (Kjipuktuk), a scenic coastal city and capital of Nova Scotia which is home to 13 Mi’kmaq First Nations, a deeply rooted African Nova Scotia community, an increasingly diverse population which also includes a vibrant workforce of people living with (dis)Abilities. The Faculty of Health’s faculty, staff and students are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations through diverse programming with a focus on critical clinical and social justice, collaborative research, and strong community partnerships. The Faculty of Health is one of the largest faculties at Dalhousie, comprised of eight schools, one college and one program, more than 200 faculty members, 80 staff members, and over 3,000 students. The School of Social Work’s BSW and MSW programs are guided by the School’s mission to create a socially just society. We are concerned with issues of poverty, inequality, and social and political marginality, and seek to develop practitioners and scholars who are critical thinkers and are effective in advancing progressive change, whether through individual or community practice, or through policy and political engagement. The School is actively working on implementing the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and further supports and works toward compliance with the Canadian Association for Social Work Education’s Statement of Complicity and Commitment to Change, in our efforts to Indigenize and decolonize social work education. A specific call that the School is actively working on is the development of a Mi’kmaq MSW program, which will be community centered. The successful applicant will be part of the working group that is currently focused upon this initiative. The successful candidate will be expected to teach BSW and/or MSW courses predominantly within the online distance programs, which are delivered to students across Canada. The incumbent in this position must be able to teach a variety of social work courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including our new Indigenous course ‘Indigenizing & Decolonizing Social Work Practice’. Please check the School’s website for more details on the programs offered by Social Work: www.socialwork.dal.ca . The candidate is expected to become an active and engaged member of the School, Faculty, and University. Applicants must have a Master of Social Work, as well as demonstrated excellence or potential in teaching, and online delivery. Preference will be given to candidates with social work practice experience from a critical clinical perspective. Applicants must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) or a related provincial social work college. Applicants must include a cover letter stating qualifications and experience; a Curriculum Vitae; a statement of teaching; evidence of teaching effectiveness; including a sample, if available, of an online course or module developed by the applicant. Please submit your complete application package to the PeopleAdmin portal, https://dal.peopleadmin.ca/postings/7810 Please include Search number in your cover letter. For further information regarding this position, contact: Dr. Judy MacDonald, Director School of Social Work Faculty of Health [email protected] All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. In keeping with the principles of employment equity and with the nature of this position, it is restricted to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. Dalhousie recognizes that candidates may self-identify in more than one equity-seeking group, and in this spirit, encourages applicants who self-identify as Indigenous and may also identify as persons with a disability, racialized persons, women, or persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
