Job Summary

The UBC-Vancouver (UBC-V) School of Nursing is dedicated to ensuring its students and faculty are advancing equity and social justice so that it can make a difference, through leading-edge nursing education, research, and practice, within an exceptional learning and working environment. To achieve this vision, the School of Nursing has created an Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) committee with the goal to decolonize nursing education by fostering an environment of safety and humility for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff, and ultimately the health care system.

The Indigenous Nursing Lead (INL) will provide onsite support for Indigenous nursing students, and establish and maintain connection to Indigenous communities who are working with or will work with UBC-Vancouver School of Nursing. The INL-Students will manage recruitment/retention initiatives and clinical placements to ensure the success of Indigenous nursing students across the nursing programs. The INL-Students works to support culturally safe student experiences and to build a community for Indigenous nursing students in the school. The incumbent will develop recruitment and outreach strategies to engage Indigenous communities. The INL will also work closely with faculty across the School working together on pedagogy specific to teaching and mentoring Indigenous students and caring for Indigenous patients.

Bringing their vast knowledge of the healthcare system and nursing coupled with their lived experience the INL will be an integral role to help the School achieve its goals of decolonizing nursing education. The INL will also work closely with faculty across the School advising on pedagogy specific to teaching and mentoring Indigenous students and caring for Indigenous patients.


Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs. Works with faculty, staff, and students in the School, Indigenous-specific portfolios at UBC, and Indigenous communities.

We offer a full range of innovative programs, including intensive BSN, MN-NP, MSN and PhD programs.
Work Performed

The Indigenous Nursing Lead will be supervised by and reports directly to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs and is responsible for the following:  

  • Develop, Implement, and manage the recruitment of Indigenous students in UBC-V Nursing program.
  • Provides Indigenous-centred mentoring, support and trauma-informed problem resolution support for Indigenous nursing students.
  • Provides academic advising, mentorship, and counseling services tailored to the needs of Indigenous students.
  • Provides advising to Indigenous students in clinical practice and career planning based on their experience as an Indigenous nurse.
  • Advocates for policies and initiatives that support the recruitment, retention, and success of Indigenous nursing students.
  • Identifies and negotiates with Indigenous Health Systems for creating nursing student placements and nursing practice collaborations.
  • Oversee nursing placements for Indigenous students, including Indigenous Health Authority placements.
  • Provides consultation, process design, facilitation, programming, and resource development services to the School of Nursing programs focused on Indigenous engagement and educational initiatives.
  • Supports and aligns stakeholder teaching and learning needs with university-wide strategic priorities including Indigenous engagement, intercultural learning, and student engagement.
  • Develop culturally relevant and sensitive nursing curriculum that integrates Indigenous knowledge, practices, and perspectives into the program.
  • Organize workshops and training sessions for faculty, staff, and students to enhance their understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and healthcare practices.
  • Engage with the Indigenous Advisory Circle for guidance on decolonizing nursing programs and facilitating relationships with Indigenous knowledge keepers.
  • Advise faculty and staff on culturally safe ways to teach Indigenous nursing students and integrate Indigenous health content in nursing courses.
  • Responsible for managing gifts for the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL) graduation, engage in Indigenous Nursing alumni events, and Indigenous nursing career services support
  • Plan and manage Indigenous events including financial management of honorariums to Elder and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Serve on the Indigenous Cultural Safety standing committee.
  • Collaborates with Indigenous communities, organizations, and leaders to recruit Indigenous students into the program.
  • Facilitates partnerships and collaborations with Indigenous communities, healthcare facilities, and organizations to provide clinical placements, research opportunities, and community-based learning experiences for students (e.g., First Nations House of Learning (FNHL), Indigenous Research Support Initiative, Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Health, and other Indigenous portfolios at UBC, First Nations Health Authority, First Nations Health Council, and other relevant agencies/groups).
  • Create and establish processes to maintain connection to and reciprocity with Indigenous collaborators and communities.
  • Monitors program outcomes, collects feedback from students and stakeholders, and uses data to evaluate the effectiveness of program initiatives, including identifying gaps and helping to inform change.
  • Other duties as required


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Error in judgement would negatively impact and damage the School of Nursing’s reputation with the Indigenous communities and Indigenous Nursing Students and complicate our relationships in response to the Truth & Reconciliation calls to action.
Supervision Received
The INL-Students will report directly to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs, with support and consultation from the ICS Co-chairs. The incumbent will work independently, in collaboration with the AD, ICS co-chairs, and other faculty and staff.
Supervision Given
This position is not expected to supervise staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Nursing and Registered Nurse with BCCNM. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Indigenous applicants preferred.
  • Extensive lived experience with Indigenous is preferred.
  • Excellent capacity for navigating complex healthcare and academic settings.
  • Extensive experience working with Indigenous people and communities.
  • Deep knowledge of Canada’s colonial history and its ongoing impact on Indigenous people today.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous traditions, values, knowledge systems, and cultures.
  • Strong understanding of the diversity of Indigenous people living in Canada.
  • Strong understanding of nursing profession in order to support students in academic and placement settings.
  • Attributes include self-directedness, reflection, critical thinking, and knowledge of Indigenous issues related to health, health care, and nursing.
  • Knowledge of diverse clinical settings; experience working within the Health Authorities, in particular, with the First Nations Health Authority, First Nations Health Council, and other relevant agencies/groups
  • Excellent written and oral communication and professional communication.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
