Department/Faculty Summary

The HVAC shop at the University of Alberta is a dynamic, challenging, and great place. The HVAC Instrumentation Tech shop provides service and maintenance to all aspects of building and lab control systems.

Position Summary

This is a skilled position requiring a Journeyman certificate with a Technical school diploma to provide assistance in heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems performing troubleshooting and field investigation to assess operating problems in those systems, and to determine solutions.

The operation of these HVAC systems provide the proper temperature, humidity and ventilation to all the building and research areas on campus; and they number over four hundred.

The size and magnitude of the University has become such that the Controls Section in the Operations Division is absolutely essential to the environmental operation of the University of Alberta. The incumbent provides service by operating, repairing and maintaining the HVAC systems and other related mechanical, electronic and pneumatic systems that are used throughout campus.

It is the responsibility of this position to ensure that environmental comfort conditions are met and equipment is repaired properly. Failure to do so would have a detrimental effect on the ability of HVAC systems to maintain the critical temperature and humidity environment necessary to prevent loss of critical research, finances, teaching time, etc.

Duties

  • Activity 1 - Repair and Calibration (30%)

All instruments and systems must be accurate and reliable for energy efficiency, research accuracy, and instructional efficiency through climatic comfort.

  • Activity 2 Installations (Construction) (15%)

Install all types of commercial and industrial instrumentation to control all mechanical systems used in HVAC applications. This includes all pneumatic, electric, and electronic devices as required, for renovations and updating of space requirements.

  • Activity 3 Preventative Maintenance (15%)

Scheduled preventative maintenance is performed to inspect, repair, and calibrate all controls to assure continued accuracy from console to end device and to prevent rapid deterioration of systems.

  • Activity 4 Air Balancing (15%)

The requirements of this activity is for the HVAC Technician to take air measurements using a variety of instruments such as, digital flow hoods, rotating vane anemometers, digital manometer, pitotube, air foil probes, digital tachometers, strobe lights, and digital volt/amp meter . Changes made to HVAC systems , or renovations to any part of a building requires an air balance of the HVAC system be performed to ensure the proper design conditions are met as set out by the design group or Engineering firm. This includes supply air, return air and exhaust air systems.

  • Activity 5- Design, Consulting, Estimating, Commissioning (15%)

This activity consists of duties relating to the engineering of systems. These duties are all interconnected and closely related.

  • Activity 6 Operating and HVAC System Trouble-shooting (10%)

Around 1960, with the advent of central air conditioning, automatic control systems evolved and have advanced technically to the sophisticated computer age. Instrumentation is continually changing and controls personnel must be familiar with a large variety of devices due to the age differences of buildings,

i.e. Some buildings have 1980 technology and others have current state of the art technology.

Qualifications

  • The minimum education required is a Journeyperson Instrumentation, and or Gasfitter Class "A and B" and or Refrigeration Mechanic ticket; the Instrumentation and Control Technician ticket will be considered an asset.
  • In addition to this, a related two-year NAIT Instrument Engineering Technology Diploma is strongly advised in order to understand the strategic complications of the HVAC Systems, from database to final hardware devices.
  • Without this diploma, an incumbent would require at least three years of experience in the maintenance and operation of building HVAC systems.

Note: Online applications are accepted until midnight Mountain Standard Time of the closing date.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.
