Position Summary

The HVAC Technician provides service by operating, repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, along with other related mechanical, electronic and pneumatic control systems that are used throughout campus.

Duties

  • Assesses operating problems in HVAC systems and determines solutions through troubleshooting and field investigation for air handlers, all types of commercial and industrial control valves, make up air units, room and space environmental controls, main building systems such as steam heat exchangers, and instrumentation field devises.
  • Responds to environmental control calls from the Facilities & Operations Work Control Centre and carries out the required corrective action
  • Repairs and calibrates all types of commercial and industrial equipment to guarantee accuracy and reliability; equipment repaired includes: digital and analog input and output sensors, stand alone programmable electronic controllers, direct digital controllers from numerous manufacturers, electro-pneumatic transducers, electronic transmitters, electronic controllers, electric and pneumatic operators and related components
  • Coordinates the repair of related equipment by other trades; following repairs, oversees the return to normal operating mode of all HVAC equipment
  • Installs all types of commercial and industrial instrumentation to control all mechanical systems used in HVAC applications; this includes all pneumatic, electric, electronic devices as required, for renovations and updating of space requirements
  • Modifies HVAC equipment to facilitate better environmental conditions and efficiency with an overall view towards energy conservation and more advanced technology
  • Checks the operation of related electrical, electronic, pneumatic equipment to ensure that all operating systems function as specified
  • Rebalances variable and constant air volume supply, return, or exhaust air boxes to meet operational needs
  • Takes measurements on existing systems to test coils/filter condition, fan performances, damper operation, and overall system efficiency
  • Discusses engineering changes with contractors, engineers and consultants regarding the operation and maintenance of HVAC system
  • Follows all safe work procedures, completes pre-job safety inspections and contributes to regular safety meetings

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an Instrument and Control Technician Journeyman Certificate.
  • Two-year Engineering Technical Diploma in a building or controls related area such as Building Environmental Systems Technology or Instrument Engineering Technology preferred OR at least three years of experience in the maintenance and operation of building HVAC systems  
  • Experience with preventative maintenance of HVAC related equipment
  • A strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical systems, Direct Digital Control (DDC) control systems and electronic and pneumatic controllers and transmitters used in the field
  • An understanding of other trades work and function is required in order to interface with the work that must be done to contribute to the design, construction, estimating and locating of an efficient working HVAC system
