SAIT’s Safety and Community Services department is responsible for the development, support and improvement of safety and security programs at SAIT. Comprised of Health, Safety and Environment and Campus Security and Emergency Services, SCS team members are focused on supporting the goal of a safe and secure campus environment for everyone in the SAIT community.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, the HSE Advisor will develop highly collaborative relationships with schools and departments in support of a safe and healthy campus for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. 
Collaborating as a member of SCS within the Corporate Services Division, the incumbent will have assigned service and program responsibilities related to the Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), Certificate of Recognition (COR), HSE regulatory compliance.
The Advisor will work with campus clients and partners in HSE education, implementation and improvement efforts. 
The Role
    • Support, guide and advise assigned schools and departments on matters of occupational health and safety and environmental management in the promotion and support of SAIT’s Health, Safety and Environment Policy and related policies and procedures.
    • Provide guidance on the development, implementation, and maintenance of departmental/school safety programs and activities in areas such as program documentation, site inspections, safe work procedures, training and incident investigations.
    • Lead or participate in incident investigations where subject matter expertise is required including identifying causal factors, root causes and corrective actions as part of management system improvements.
    • Provide guidance in the identification and evaluation of HSE hazards and potential exposures to individuals, providing advice and recommendations on appropriate controls (ex. ergonomics, occupational hygiene matters, evaluation and selection of PPE) and develop practical solutions for the application of controls and corrective actions. 
    • Contribute to the implementation, administration, sustainment and improvement of a comprehensive HSEMS that incorporates COR requirements and that is designed to ensure a safe campus environment, meet regulatory requirements and support continuous improvement of HSE practices and outcomes. 
    • Assist with or lead the COR audit cycle of improvement efforts and assurance activities.
    • Contribute to the productive functioning and betterment of the SCS and Corporate Services Division.


Qualifications & Experience
    • Degree or diploma in health and safety, environmental science, industrial hygiene, health physics, chemistry, engineering, risk management, or a related field required.
    • A combination of accredited education and applicable experience may be considered.
    • Recognized health and safety or environmental certification (e.g. CRSP, ROH, EP, CRST etc.) is an asset.
    • 5 to 7 years’ relevant work experience in a role primarily related to health and safety, occupational hygiene, or environment.
    • Experience with auditing and leading training courses.
    • Experience in a post-secondary education an asset.

    • Skills Required
    • Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety and/or environmental legislation, standards and best practices with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply same towards the identification and implementation of practical solutions is required.
    • Demonstrated communication skills with experience in the development of technical documents in the context of a HSEMS.  
    • Sound judgment and interpersonal skills in situations of noncompliance or ambiguity.
    • Ability to work with others in a team environment including sharing knowledge with co-workers.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Salary range: $80,000.00 - $90,000
Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
Hours Per Week: 37.5
