Job Summary
UBC Smart Structures in the Department of Civil Engineering is looking for a Hardware Engineering Technician to support our research. You will need to design and develop some hardware components for a smart construction project to complete the automation of machine control. You will also design and modify electronic components (such as printed circuit board (PCB)) for digital/analog signal processing.

Working time:

Part-time (2days/week): 15 hours/week

Organizational Status

The candidate will be part of the research team at UBC Smart Structures. He/she will provide technical support for the researchers in the UBC Smart Structures. He/she will be directly supervised by Prof. T.Y. Yang and co-supervised by Yifei. Regular meeting with Prof. Yang will be required for this job position.


Work Performed

The work performed in our team would be:

  • Design and modify PCB for digital/analog signal processing according to user needs, occasionally starting from scratch, but mostly rely on standard products for development
  • Design and build electronic components.
  • Responsible for meeting with researchers and assessing the user needs to determine designs
  • Soldering
  • Circuit design and simulation
  • Work with a team of world-class researchers to assemble control hardware for large-scale laboratory machines.

Supervision Received
Prof. Tony T.Y. Yang ([email protected] ) will provide high-level supervision to the candidates to ensure the quality and correctness of the work. The candidates will frequently interact with the Prof. Tony T.Y. Yang through email or weekly meetings to report the progress of the project. Yifei Xiao will provide medium-level supervision ([email protected] ) to the candidates to ensure the that all research works can be done properly.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The successful candidate will be part of our team as a Hardware Engineering Technician working on the design and modification of complex printed circuit board (PCB) for signal processing. Candidate must have actual design and implementation experience of PCB for industry or commercial applications. The detailed qualifications are listed below:

  • Able to design and modify PCB for digital/analog signal processing.
  • Have experience of developing filters for signal conditioning.
  • Able to use and modify of multifunction I/O device (such as PCI 6229 and PCIe-6323 from National Instruments (NI) company)
  • Familiar with different computer hardware, such as DDR3/4/5, PCI and PCIe hardware.
  • Familiar with different instruments, such as load cell and displacement sensors.
  • Basic knowledge of control, such as the use of PID control.
  • Demonstrates initiative in working independently in solving complex problems.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be a plus to have experience of using control systems of hydraulic machines, and have experience of using of Raspberry Pi and Jetson nano.
