Grounds Summer Student

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Facilities and Operations is hiring temporary Grounds staff for summer casual appointments ending September 1st, 2024.

Applicants must be available to work full-time from May until September 1st, 2024. Hours of work are from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position 

Reporting to the Manager Landscape Services, the grounds summer student will assist with sod laying, mowing, pruning, weeding and general grounds maintenance and upkeep around the University Campus.  Additionally there will be opportunities to perform some general, low level facility maintenance such as painting. The successful candidate can look forward to an energetic, professional team environment.

Duties 

  • Planting of flowers (annuals)
  • Turf fertilization
  • Weed Spraying
  • Spreading of mulch in shrub beds
  • Pruning of shrubs and trees
  • Litter collection and garbage can emptying in area, occasional cleaning of cans
  • Daily check of all entrances and stairwells for removal of sand and debris
  • Removal of leaves and debris from shrub beds.
  • Weeding of flower planters, shrub beds, and flower beds as required
  • Grass cutting and trimming and occasional raking
  • Occasional graffiti and sticker removal
  • Irrigation
  • Use of hand tools (pruning shears, cordless drill, etc.)
  • Shoveling
  • Rototilling
  • Occasional installation, removal and maintenance of grounds fixtures (tables, benches, water features, fountains, eaves troughs, etc.)

Additional Work Related Responsibilities

  • Ensures safety protocols are used according to the safety regulations of the UofA and OHS while working in close proximity of large equipment such as: skid steers, loaders, graders, and other large grounds related equipment.
  • Relaying any irrigation problems or maintenance concerns to supervisor/lead hand.
  • Informing supervisor/lead hand of any safety concerns such as; cracked sidewalks, hard surface trip hazards, hanging branches, etc.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma
  • Must be currently enrolled as a Post-Secondary student
  • Strong communication (oral and written) skills
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to self-manage workload and work under limited supervision
